CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – After dropping to a two goal disadvantage early in the first half, the women’s soccer team took back control of the match, answering the two goals scored by the Mocs with two of their own. Wofford freshman forward, Emily Bougas, accounted for both goals. The match was sent into overtime at a 2-2 score and remained the same throughout the two ten minute overtime periods despite a few close attempts taken by the Terriers in the second overtime. The draw takes Coach Kiah’s program to a 5-4-4 overall record, with a 0-2-4 standing in the Southern Conference. The Mocs grab a 3-10-1 record with the tie and stand at 1-4-1 in the Southern Conference.
Chattanooga shot out of the gates with two goals scored in the first 20 minutes of play. In the 10th minute, UTC’s leading scorer Donna-Kay Henry posted her sixth goal of the season, knocking in a ball that was setup by teammate Kerbi Towry.
Nine minutes later the Mocs were able to take a two goal advantage, creating a goal off a corner in the 19th minute. Lauren Wilson placed a corner kick in the air to Danielle Barr, who took the ball off the head and directed it into the Terrier net.
The Terriers never dropped their heads, taking the momentum back only seconds later with a goal by freshman forward Emily Bougas. Nikki Siebert placed a streamline through-ball to the foot of Emily Bougas, who was making a run down the center of the field. Bougas lined up the shot and blasted it past UTC goalkeeper Taylor Mangrum. The assist gives Siebert her sixth assist of the season, and the score gives Bougas her fifth goal of the season.
With new spirits Wofford kept applying pressure on the UTC goal as the first half dwindled down. Siebert forced Mangrum to make a save in the 28th minute and also had a shot blocked in the 43rd minute.
At the end of the half, Chattanooga went into the locker rooms with a 2-1 lead. Wofford took six shots throughout the 45 minute period, scoring one and forcing the keeper to make two saves. Coach Kiah made a personnel change in the 30th minute, putting senior goalkeeper Katie McChesney in the net and taking out Kimberly Cohn. McChesney finished out the match for the Terriers.
Entering the second half, Wofford held on to the momentum scoring the equalizer in the 52nd minute. Bougas knocked in her second goal of the day and accounted for her sixth of the season. The forward took advantage of a Chattanooga defensive mistake inside their own box and made the Mocs pay with her score, tying the game 2-2.
Throughout the duration of the second half, Wofford and Chattanooga exchanged shots back and forth. The two programs also mirrored each other’s personnel changes as they both subbed in players multiple times to keep fresh legs.
In the 85th minute, Daniella Fatti nearly ended the match with a well-placed shot, but the attempt nicked off the post. With neither team able to finish opportunities throughout the rest of the second half, regulation ended in a 2-2 score.
In the first overtime Wofford forced Mangrum to scramble for two saves, with shots by Siebert and Maggie McLaughlin. Siebert pushed forward a shot in the 96th minute and McLaughlin shot her attempt with 15 seconds left in the first overtime. The Terrier defense held strong, inhibiting Chattanooga from getting a shot off.
The second overtime produced four heart-stopping attempts for the Terriers as they looked for the finishing goal in the last ten minutes of play. Siebert started things off with a shot wide in the 105th minute. Blackburn followed suit with a shot wide a minute later. Siebert kept pressing with a shot in the 107th, only to have it saved by Mangrum. Megan Wellborn put the final attempt toward the UTC net in the 108th minute taking a corner kick off the head and directing it just high of the crossbar.
The double overtime ended with a 2-2 result. The draw gives the Terriers their fourth tie of the past five games. The finish gives Wofford their fourth draw in the Southern Conference.
Coach Kiah’s program tallied 16 total shots during the match, having seven of the attempts be on target. Siebert had a spectacular day, leading the team in shots (6) and shots on goal (3), and also celebrating her birthday during the match. The senior’s assist to Bougas accounts for a team leading six assists on the year. Bougas had a perfect scoring average against the Mocs, shooting two and having both go in the net. She leads the team in goals (6) and points (13).
The Terriers continue conference play at home on Snyder Field, Friday, October 15th. Wofford will face off against the No. 1 team in the SoCon, UNC Greensboro, at 7:00pm. Greensboro has a perfect record in the Southern Conference, with a 5-0 standing and 10-1-1 record on the season.
