UNC Greensboro Ends Terriers Hopes for Tournament Run

Box Score Game Stats

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro dashed the playoff hopes of Wofford College Sunday afternoon, defeating the Terriers 1-0 at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartan’s Kristen Schmibauer scored the goal for Greensboro, ruining Wofford’s chances to advance any further in the Southern Conference tournament. Coach Kiah’s program ends the 2010 season with a 7-8-4 record and a 2-5-4 standing in the Southern Conference. Greensboro will continue their tournament run with a 17-1-1 record, playing Elon November 5th in Cullowhee, N.C. at Western Carolina University.

The nationally ranked Spartans struck early with a goal in the 8th minute of the match. UNCG’s Kristen Schmidbauer accounted for her eighth score of the season, knocking in a header from a corner kick set up. Stine Schoeing lifted a ball into the box from the corner, finding the head of Morgan Kennedy. Kennedy sent the ball back toward the near post, where Schmidbauer found the back of the net from a few yards out to give the Greensboro a 1-0 lead.

The Terriers continued to have trouble controlling the air in front of the Wofford net, giving up two other threatening header opportunities. Greensboro was able to push headers from Lauren Hein and Kaytee O’Brien toward goalkeeper Kimberly Cohn, but both Greensboro attempts missed their target.

The Spartans protected their net well, keeping Wofford shotless during the first 45. The Terriers best attempt came in the 25th minutes as Emily Bougas sprinted toward a throughball passed from Chelsea Ashworth. UNCG’s Kelsey Kearney charged out the net and met the ball before Bougas was able to get a foot on it, pushing the ball out of bounds.

UNCG controlled a 1-0 lead entering halftime.

Wofford was awarded their first corner kick in the sixth minute of the second half. Erin Stephenson crossed the corner toward the back post, where Sydney Reed was making a run in. Reed headed the ball toward the right upper ninety, but the attempt sailed outside of the post.

Greensboro mirrored the corner kick attack in the 62nd minute, putting a shot on frame off the corner kick. The Spartan’s Kaytee O’Brien knocked the shot toward the far post, but Anne Phillips stood her ground at the line and spoiled the attempt deflecting the ball out and away from the goal line. Cat Barnekow took the rebound and immediately sent it back toward the Wofford net, only to have it clank the left goal post.

The Spartans were able to hold on to their lead throughout the rest of regulation, ending the match 1-0. Wofford totaled two shots on the day, compared to Greensboro’s 17. Cohn had five saves in the match.
