Men's Basketball Falls In Heartbreaker 53-49 To Wisconsin

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Wofford men’s basketball team was tied with Wisconsin with 1:17 left in the game, but came up short in a 53-49 final score. The Terriers were down eight at the half but used a 12-4 run to tie the game four minutes into the second half and kept it a one possession game until the final seconds of the NCAA Tournament at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.

Wofford ends the season with a 26-9 record, the most wins in school history. Wisconsin is 24-8 overall. Wofford was a #13 seed in their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Wisconsin was a #4 seed and advance to the second round.

The Terriers were led by Jamar Diggs with 13 points, Noah Dahlman added ten points and Tim Johnson had a game-high nine rebounds. The Badgers were led by Jon Leuer with 20 points and Trevon Hughes with 19 points.

The Terriers scored first with two free throws by Noah Dahlman. Wofford had a 6-4 lead before Trevon Hughes hit a three pointer four minutes into the game for a 7-6 advantage. The Badgers continued the 8-0 run by Hughes and had a 12-6 lead at the 14:17 mark. Kevin Giltner ended the run by making one of two free throws at 12:41.

Wisconsin added a free throw and then Jon Leuer scored in the paint to give the Badgers a 15-7 advantage with 9:40 on the clock as the Terriers were getting shots, but they were not falling. Wofford ended the 13-1 run by Wisconsin with two free throws by Noah Dahlman. A bucket by Tim Johnson cut the lead the 19-11 at the 7:34 mark.

Trevon Hughes scored for the Badgers to make it a 23-13 game with 4:52 remaining in the first half. Jamar Diggs and Cameron Rundles hit buckets for Wofford in the final two minutes and the Terriers were down 27-19 at the break. In the first half, the Terriers were 7-of-25 (28.0%) and did not hit a three pointer (0-3), while the Badgers were 34.5% from the floor (10-29).

To open the second half, Wofford’s Jamar Diggs hit a jumper. After a bucket by the Badgers, Junior Salters hit a three for Wofford to make it a 29-24 game. Jamar Diggs hit a three as well and it was a two point game. With the score 31-27, Diggs hit two more jumpers to tie the game at 31 each with 16:26 on the clock and Wisconsin called a timeout.

Down 35-33, Junior Salters hit a three and the Terriers took the lead. After trading leads, the score was tied at 40 with 9:31 left in the second half. The game was tied at 42 before the Badgers regained the lead at 45-42. Cameron Rundles and Terry Martin hit buckets to take a 46-45 lead with six minutes on the clock.

Cameron Rundles maintained the Terriers’ one point lead at 48-47 with a jumper from the free throw line with 4:40 on the clock. Wisconsin took the lead at 49-48 at the 1:50 mark, but Terry Martin hit one-of-two free throws at 1:17 to tie the game. Jon Leuer hit a jumper with 17 seconds on the clock to give the Badgers a two-point lead. A turnover with 4.9 seconds on the clock gave the ball back to Wisconson and they added two free throws by Jon Leuer to seal the 53-49 victory.

Wofford shot 41.7% from the floor and 42.9% (3-7) from three. From the free throw line, the Terriers were 46.2%. Wisconsin was 37.0% overall and 11.1% from behind the arc. The Badgers were 63.2% from the line. Wofford had a 37-30 lead on the boards, but committed eleven turnovers to only four for Wisconsin.

Noah Dahlman scored in double-figures for the 35th time this season and has a streak of 48 games with ten or more points. The loss ended a 13-game winning streak for the Terriers, the longest in school history and the second-longest in the NCAA.The 19 points by Wofford were the second-fewest in a half this season (17 at The Citadel, January 21).

Wisconsin will play #12 seed Cornell, who defeated #5 seed Temple 78-65 in the first game of the session on Sunday in Jacksonville.
