Former Assistant Football Coach Tom Bryant Passes Away

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Tom Bryant, who served as an assistant football coach at Wofford College for eight seasons, passed away on Thursday, June 3. He was a special education teacher at Armuchee High School and was the offensive line coach for the football team.

Visitation will be on Saturday, June 5 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2010 at Mason Funeral Home in Sommerville, Georgia. Coach Tom Dowling and Coach Mike Ayers will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be the offensive line of Armuchee High School.

Bryant was on the coaching staff at Wofford from 1988-90 and from 1995-99. In his first stint, he was the offensive line coach. He left the Terriers to become the head coach at Tusculum College, where he spent four seasons. In 1995 he returned to the Wofford staff as defensive coordinator.

He began his coaching career in 1976 at Newberry College and also coached at
East Tennessee State (1978-79), Marietta (Ga.) High School (1980-84), and Cumberland College (1984-87).

A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Bryant played football Morehead State University and Georgetown College. He earned a B.A. degree in health and physical education from Newberry College in 1977 and received a Master of Education degree in health and physical education in 1982 from East Tennessee State.

Bryant is survived by his wife, Laura Bryant, and sons, Austin Bryant and Champ Bryant.
