GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wofford goalkeeper Erika Christensen fended off the UNC Greensboro offense, racking up nine saves on the evening to lead the Terriers to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with the Spartans Friday evening. The tie gives Wofford its first-ever result against UNCG in program history, as the Terriers had fallen in all 18 previous meetings.
With the tie, the Terriers now stand at 8-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in Southern Conference play. UNCG’s record sits at 6-7-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the SoCon.
Christensen was flawless in the first 45 minutes of play for the Terriers, stopping five shots on goal by UNCG to keep the score at 0-0 at the end of the first half.
The Spartans struck early in the 2nd half, as Karina Rodriguez headed the ball into the goal following a saved shot by Nitang Jones to take the 1-0 advantage.
The Terriers answered back in the 78th minute as Emily Bougas scored her 12th goal of the season, scoring into an empty net when UNCG keeper Kelsey Kearney came out of the goal to stop a pass by Amanda Morris from the left side of the box. The goal was the first that the Terriers have scored against UNC Greensboro since the 1998 season.
The Terrier defense and Christensen’s play in goal was key in the final minutes of the second half, keeping the Spartans off the scoreboard to set up overtime play.
Emily Bougas sent a shot toward the goal in the 92nd minute, but Kearney was able to prevent the ball from finding the back of the net. Christensen earned another save for Wofford in the final seconds of the period to send the match into a second overtime period.
The Terriers were able to attempt three shots during the second overtime period, as Amanda Morris had two shots that were blocked by Spartan defenders and Alex Kachulis sent a shot that sailed high of the goal in the late minutes, but were unable to produce the golden-goal, with the match ending with a 1-1 tie.
Wofford returns to action at Elon Sunday afternoon, with the match slated for a start time of 2:00 p.m.
