BOONE, N.C. – In the second consecutive double-overtime match for the Wofford women’s soccer team, the Terriers fell to Appalachian State by a 1-0 score as Julia Holz scored the golden goal for the Mountaineers in the 107th minute Sunday afternoon at the Ted Mackorell Complex. The loss drops the Terriers to 7-3-0 overall, 1-3-0 in Southern Conference action.
Holz’s goal took place in the 7th minute of the second overtime period, as she took a shot from 15 yards out that deflected into the back of the net off of the left goalpost. Morgan Fancher and Hannah Coad were credited with assists.
The first 45 minutes of play turned out to be a defensive battle, as the Terriers were only able to attempt one shot when Amanda Morris sent a shot wide right of the goal in the ninth minute. Appalachian State’s Meggie Graham put the only shot on goal in the first half for the Mountaineers, but Wofford goalkeeper Erika Christensen stopped the scoring attempt in the 25th minute.
The second half of play saw more of an offensive output, as the two squads combined for a total of 12 shots. The Terriers saw two scoring opportunities within the first five minutes of the half, as both Alex Kachulis and Emily Bougas put shots on goal, but were unable to put the ball past ASU goalkeeper Amy Kolowsky.
Wofford’s best scoring attempt throughout the entire match took place during the 78th minute of action, as Maureen Buff was able to break through several defenders into the penalty box and sent a shot that was saved by Kolowsky. The rebound went right to Bougas, who had only an ASU defender at the goal line to attempt a save, but she sent a shot that went just left of the goalpost.
In the first 10 minute overtime period, the Terriers put two shots on goal, with Chelsea Ashworth putting a shot on frame within the first 30 seconds of the period, and she followed that up by putting another on goal in the 96th minute.
Christensen took the loss in goal for the Terriers, allowing the one goal, while tallying three saves and facing a total of 14 shots. Kolowsky was awarded the win for Appalachian State, picking up three saves while facing 11 total shots.
Wofford’s next contest will take place Thursday evening as they travel to Birmingham, Ala. to take on Samford, with the match set for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
