SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s soccer season came to an end Wednesday night with a 4-0 loss to Furman at Stone Soccer Stadium. The Terriers wrap up the 2011 season with an overall record of 8-7-2 and 2-7-2 in Southern Conference play. The Paladins improve to 11-7-2 overall and 6-3-2 in SoCon play, and will take part in the 2011 SoCon Women’s Soccer Championship, beginning Sunday afternoon.
The Paladins jumped to an early lead, as Ali Simpson scored in the 12
th minute of play, sending a shot into the upper left side of the goal above the reach of Wofford goalkeeper Kara Boggs. Rachel Shelnutt was credited with the assist.
Furman added to its lead in the 29
th minute of play as Dee Makris sent a shot from over 20 yards out into the right corner of the net. Alexa Morse was credited with the assist.
Wofford struggled offensively during the first half of play, as the first shot that the Terriers were able to attempt took place in the 42
nd minute when Maggie Bosley sent a shot wide right of the goal.
In the 55
th minute, Furman set the score at 3-0 when Laura White sent a free kick in from just over 20 yards out into the top right corner of the goal.
The Paladins increased their lead to 4-0 in the 60
th minute when Rachel Shelnutt scored, drawing Boggs out of goal and being able to score just before she was able to regain her position.
Wofford tried to answer back in the 62
nd minute with Erin Stephenson sending a shot that bounced off of the crossbar to the feet of Chelsea Ashworth, who then sent a shot toward the goal from nearly six yards out, but Furman goalkeeper Jessica Smith smothered the ball, preventing the score.
Ashworth saw another scoring opportunity in the 65
th minute, breaking free of Paladin defenders, but sent a shot that went just a few feet to the left of the goal.
In the 79
th minute, Maggie McLaughlin sent a shot from just inside the 18-yard box rocketing toward the goal, but Furman goalkeeper Holly Reilly made the save. Maggie O’Brien sent a shot on goal in the 80
th minute, but Reilly prevented the score.
In the final minute of play, Maggie O’Brien sent a one on one shot that went wide left of the goal.
Boggs takes the loss in goal for the Terriers, earning three saves while facing a total of 10 shots. Smith is awarded the win for Furman, earning one save. Reilly played the final 12 minutes in goal for the Paladins, earning two saves.
