BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford women’s soccer team wrapped up a three-match road swing Thursday night, falling to Samford by a 3-0 margin. The loss drops the Terriers to 7-4-0 in the season and 1-4-0 in Southern Conference play.
The Bulldogs took the early 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute of play when Michelle Moll sent a shot from 25 yards out into the left corner of the net. Trine Taule was credited with the assist.
Wofford was unable to answer back, as Anne Phillips sent a shot toward the goal in the 38th minute, but it sailed just left of the goal, with the score remaining 1-0 in Samford’s favor at the half.
Samford increased its lead to 2-0 just after the start of the second half, as Kaley Blanton scored in the 48th minute, putting in a shot from five yards away following a shot by Michelle Moll that Wofford goalkeeper Kimberly Cohn was unable to hold on to.
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the 61st minute when Amanda Abbott scored from 35 yards away when she stole the ball from Kimberly Cohn who had come out of the goal to retrieve the ball.
Wofford tried to find an offensive spark in the closing minutes of the match, as Maggie McLaughlin, Erin Stephenson, and Evie Kytan each put a shot on goal within the final 17 minutes of play, but were unable to score.
Erika Christensen took the loss for the Terriers, allowing one goal, while picking up one save in the first 45 minutes of play. Kimberly Cohn finished the match in goal for Wofford, allowing two goals while earning one save. Alyssa Whitehead was awarded the win for Samford, earning one save in 81 minutes of action. Julia Wright played the remaining nine minutes, racking up two saves.
The Terriers will return Snyder Field Sunday afternoon, hosting Chattanooga at 2:00 p.m.
