SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s basketball team picked up a 63-57 non-conference win against Jacksonville University on Sunday afternoon at Benjamin Johnson Arena. Despite not hitting a field goal in the last eight minutes, the Terriers hit 9 of 12 free throws in the final 55 seconds of the game to secure the victory.
Wofford is now 7-4 on the season, while Jacksonville is 2-8 overall. Wofford was led by Kevin Giltner with 14 points and eight rebounds. Karl Cochran added 13 points and Lee Skinner scored eleven. The Dolphins were led by Delwan Graham with 13 points and Glenn Powell with 12 points.
“That was a tractor pull but we were able to come away with the win,” said head coach Mike Young. “I thought we did some very good things, but I did not think we were very smart at times. I do not think we handled some situations very well, but I thought we competed on the glass and I am surprised that they out-rebounded us. We will take it and move on.”
The Dolphins scored first, but Wofford answered with a three by Karl Cochran. Two buckets by Lee Skinner and a three by Kevin Giltner gave the Terriers a 10-4 lead seven minutes into the first half. After taking a 12-4 advantage, the Dolphins answered with a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 13-10 with 8:30 on the clock.
Wofford scored the next four points to push the lead back to 17-10 with just under eight minutes left in the first half. The Terriers continued the 7-0 run to make it a 20-10 game. Jacksonville pulled back to within six at 22-16, but six straight points by Wofford made it a 28-16 game with two minutes remaining in the half. Drew Crowell hit a jumper that gave the Terriers a 30-18 lead at the break.
Jacksonville opened the scoring in the second half, but after the first four minutes of play the Terriers had a 34-23 advantage. The Dolphins cut the lead to 35-29 with a 6-1 run at the 14:00 mark. Jacksonville then made it a five point game at 38-33 after eight minutes of play. Kevin Giltner answered with a three pointer and Karl Cochran hit a jumper for a 43-33 lead.
A three by Karl Cochran gave the Terriers a 46-35 lead with 8:22 left in the second half. After a 7-0 run by the Dolphins that included a three by Keith McDougald, the score was 46-42 with 5:39 on the clock. Aerris Smith ended the run with two free throws with 5:07 left in the second half to give Wofford a 48-42 lead.
Two free throws by Kevin Giltner made it a 51-42 score, but the Dolphins answered with a three by Tevin Galvin with 3:56 on the clock to cut the lead to six points. A lay-up by Jacksonville and a three by Russell Powell made it a 54-50 game with 1:33 remaining. Kevin Giltner hit two free throws and Aerris Smith added two more for a 58-50 lead with 44 seconds on the clock. Karl Cochran hit two free throws and Brad Loesing added two for a 63-54 score with 11.2 remaining. A three by Delwan Graham made the final score 63-57 in favor of the Terriers.
The Terriers shot 41.5 % from the floor for the evening, while Jacksonville shot 40.0% overall. Wofford finished 4-13 from behind the arc. The Dolphins went 5-11 from three, with all five makes in the second half. Wofford was 25-of-39 from the free throw line, while Jacksonville went 4-of-9 from the charity stripe. The Dolphins out-rebounded Wofford by a 36-33 margin. Tevin Galvin fouled out for Jacksonville.
Wofford will begin a three-game non-conference road swing this Wednesday night at High Point, with tip at 7:00 p.m. The Terriers will then face South Carolina on December 28 and Wake Forest on January 2 before returning home on Thursday, January 5 against the College of Charleston.
