Women’s Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision to Western Carolina in Double Overtime

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Wofford women’s soccer team fell to Western Carolina Friday evening by a 2-1 score in double overtime, as the Catamounts scored in the 102nd minute.
 
Wofford falls to 7-2-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Southern Conference play, while Western Carolina improves to an overall record of 7-3-1 and 2-1-0 in league action.
 
The Terriers struck first in the 21st minute when Emily Bougas put a shot from 10 yards out past WCU keeper Katie Jacobs into the right side of the goal.  Anne Phillips was credited with the assist.
 
Wofford put three more shots on goal during the first 45 minutes of play, but were unable to find the back of the net.  Terrier keeper Erika Christensen stopped two shots to keep the score at 1-0 at the half.
 
The Catamounts tied the match in the 65th minute when Laura Greb headed the ball past Christensen following a crossing pass from Samantha Hodge.
 
Bougas and Shonte Campbell each put a shot on goal in the remaining minutes of regulation, trying to score the game-winner for Wofford, but none were able to find their way past Jacobs as the score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation.
 
The first ten-minute overtime period was a defensive struggle, as neither team was able to put a shot on goal.
 
Western Carolina scored the golden goal in the 102nd minute when Tara Budnick headed the ball into the back of the net following a corner kick by Hodge.
 
Christensen took the loss for Wofford, tallying three saves while facing a total of 10 shots.  Jacobs earned the win for WCU, picking up five saves while facing 11 shots.
 
The Terriers will return to action Sunday afternoon as they face Appalachian State at 2:00 p.m. in Boone, N.C.
