SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Emily Bougas and Maureen Buff each scored a goal and recorded an assist to lead Wofford past the Spartans of USC Upstate, 2-0, Thursday night. The Terriers improved to 5-2-0 as they get set to begin conference play next week. The Spartans dropped their seventh straight and fall to 1-7-0 for the year.
Bougas and Buff first combined in the 32
st minute to give Wofford a 1-0 lead. Buff played a through ball to Bougas, who was able to beat Spartan goalkeeper, Sarah Plantz, one-on-one from ten yards. It was Bougas’ third goal and Buff’s fourth assist of the year. Buff has recorded a goal or an assist in five of seven games this season. Wofford dominated the first half, outshooting USC Upstate (9-0) and creating several quality scoring chances.
The second half was much of the same as the Terriers continued to control possession and repeatedly tested Plantz. After many good chances, Wofford would double their lead in the 76
th minute when Bougas and Buff would combine again. This time, however, Bougas played a ball across the top of the box to Buff, who held of a defender before firing a shot past Plantz into the bottom left corner of the net. It was Bougas’ first assist and Buff’s first goal since scoring in the season opener. In the game, the Terriers held a dominant edge in shots (21-2) and corners taken (7-0).
With the help of the Terrier defense, Kara Boggs earned her first shutout of the season and improved to 3-1-0 overall. Boggs recorded two saves on 2 shots. Sarah Plantz gets the loss for the Spartans and falls to 1-7-0 on the season. Plantz faced 21 shots and made six saves.
The Terriers return to the pitch on Friday, September 21, at the College of Charleston to open Southern Conference play. The match is set to kick-off at 6:00 p.m.
