CHARLESTON, S.C. – Three first half goals proved too much as Wofford women’s soccer team fell to The Citadel 3-1 Sunday afternoon in Charleston. The Terriers fall to 5-4-0 overall and 0-2 in Southern Conference play this season. The Bulldogs improve to 3-6-0 and 1-1 in SoCon action.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 15
th minute when Anastasia Mesa and Nicole Levermann combined to find Jannel Johnson, who was able to score past Wofford keeper Kara Boggs. The Citadel would add to their lead in the 21
st minute when Vanessa Aponte was able to beat Boggs. The Bulldogs extended their lead to three with a goal in the 39
th minute. Aponte assisted Mariana Garcia, who scored her six goal of the season. Wofford would get one goal back three minutes later when Mary Kathryn Macklen assisted on Mary Beth Bleekrode’s first career goal. The Citadel held the edge in shots (11-5) and Wofford in corners (3-1) after one period of play.
Kara Boggs was replaced in goal by Kimberly Cohn to start the second half. After four first half goals, neither team would find the back of the net in the second half. Wofford took 11 second half shots but were unable to score past Bulldog goalkeeper Sarah Katchen.
Kara Boggs gets the loss for Wofford and drops to 3-3 on the year. She allowed all three Citadel goals and recorded one save on 11 shots. Kimberly Cohn made four saves on 13 shots faced in 45 minutes of action. Sarah Katchen earned the win for the Bulldogs and improves to 3-5 this season. She made eight saves on 16 shots.
The Terriers return to the pitch on Thursday, September 27 when they travel to face the Mocs of Chattanooga. The game is set to kick-off at 7:00 p.m.
