SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford scored three second half goals in route to a 3-1 come from behind victory over Wofford on Sunday afternoon. Wofford drops to 6-5-0 and 1-3 in SoCon play this season, and Samford improves 6-5-1 and 3-0-1 in the SoCon.
Wofford opened the scoring in the 14
th minute when Mary Beth Bleekrode was able to beat Bulldog goalkeeper, Melissa Montgomery, on a free kick from 20 yards out. The ball went over Montgomery’s outstretched hands, deflected off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net. The goal was Bleekrode’s second of the season. Samford controlled the remainder of the first half as they fought to score an equalizer. They outshot the Terriers (8-4) and took the only corner of the half, but Wofford held a 1-0 lead at the break.
The second half was much of the same as Samford continued to dominate play. The Bulldogs would finally tie the game in the 73
rd minute when Adrianne Mancino assisted on Brittany Hoffman’s fifth goal this season. Mancino found Hoffman at the top of 18 yard box, who was able to turn and place the ball into the top left corner of the net to make the score 1-1. Samford would take the lead just five minutes later when Michelle Moll was able to slot the ball past Wofford goalie, Kimberly Cohn, from 10 yards out. Moll was able to win the ball from two Terrier defenders and find the bottom left corner of the net to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage. Samford would double their lead in the 84
th minute after Trine Taule found the top right corner of the net off Shanika Thomas’ cross to the near post. Overall Samford held the edge in shots (18-3) and corners (4-2) as they controlled possession for the bulk of the game.
Kimberly Cohn gets the loss for the Terriers in her first start of the season. She recorded six saves on 18 shots faced. Melissa Montgomery earned the win for Samford and improves to 4-1-1. She did not make a save as she allowed one goal on three Wofford shots.
Wofford returns to the pitch October 5, when they host the Elon Phoenix in SoCon play. The match is set to kick-off at 6:00 p.m.
