GREENSBORO, N.C. – Playing their third game in five days, the Wofford men’s basketball team was defeated 71-52 by UNCG on Wednesday night at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Spartans used a 15-3 run to end the first half as they built a 43-30 lead that the Terriers could not overcome.
Wofford moves to 7-11 on the season and 1-4 in the Southern Conference. UNCG is 4-12 overall and 2-3 in the SoCon. The Terriers were led by Spencer Collins with 12 points and Karl Cochran had eleven points. The Spartans had 19 points from Trevis Simpson, 16 points from Derrell Amrstrong and 13 points from Kelvin McNeil.
The Terriers scored first, but the Spartans had an early 5-2 lead. Karl Cochran tied the game at five with a three pointer. A three pointer by John Swinton began a 7-0 run to give Wofford a 12-9 at the 13:54 mark. The Terriers took a 17-15 lead after a lay-up by Lee Skinner, but the Spartans scored the next eight points as they took a 23-17 advantage. Spencer Collins ended the run with a three pointer.
Wofford cut the lead to 26-23 after a three pointer by Karl Cochran with 8:01 on the clock in the first half. The Terriers made it a 28-27 score after Karl Cochran had a lay-up after a turnover, but the Spartans answered with the next seven points for a 35-27 lead with 4:15 left in the half. Wofford ended the run with a three pointer by John Swinton to cut the lead to 35-30, but the Spartans scored the final eight points of the half in just 64 seconds to take a 43-30 lead at the break.
To open the second half, the Spartans pushed the advantage to 48-34 after four minutes of play. UNCG had a 54-40 lead after a jump shot by Jarell Byrd with 11:55 on the clock. The lead for the Spartans was 57-46 after a lay-up and free throw by Aerris Smith at the 7:59 mark. That was as close as the Terriers would come, as the Spartans were able to win 71-52.
Wofford shot 36.5% from the floor while UNCG shot 44.4% overall. The Terriers were 6-of-19 from with three, while the Spartans were 4-of-12 from behind the arc. UNCG was 23-of-31 from the line while Wofford was 8-of-13 on free throws. UNCG had a 43 to 25 lead on the glass. The loss ended a nine-game winning streak for the Terriers in the series.
Wofford’s three-game road trip ends Saturday night at Elon before returning home on Thursday, January 24 against Furman.
