Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman forward Faith Lifer would score just before halftime, but it wasn't enough as the Wofford women's soccer team was defeated by Samford University 2-1 on Thursday night in Southern Conference play.
With the loss, the Terriers have their five-game winning streak snapped and move to 5-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the SoCon. With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 8-2-1 overall and remain undefeated in SoCon play at 2-0-1.
In the first half, Samford had the first chance of the match in the 16th minute when Malcanisha Kelley fired a shot that was saved by Wofford senior goalkeeper Kimberly Cohn. The Bulldogs then gave the Terriers a scare in the Trine Taule had a shot that hit the post in the 19th minute.
The early pressure paid off as Samford would strike first in the 20th minute when Taylor Borman would head in a goal off a cross from Anna Allen for her first of the season making the score 1-0. Borman quickly created another chance for Samford when her shot in the 23rd minute hit the crossbar.
Senior midfielder Maggie Bosley would create the first opportunity for Wofford when she had a shot sail just over the goal in the 24th minute.
The Bulldogs would create another great chance in the 37th minute when Hallie Georgi attempted a shot that was saved by Cohn. Wofford would respond in the 41st minute with another shot by Bosley that was saved by Samford goalkeeper Melissa Montgomery.
Lifer would then put the Terriers on the board in the 43rd minute with her first career goal for Wofford. She placed the ball into the back of the net off of Bosley's free kick tying the match at 1-1 going into the intermission.
In the second half, Wofford would create the first chance as sophomore forward Chloe Brackett would have her shot saved by Montgomery in the 48th minute. Samford would then answer with an opportunity of its own when Michelle Moll would have her shot sail high in the 49th minute.
Cohn would make a huge double save in the 55th minute when she made an initial save of Taule's shot and then quickly made a kick-save on Moll's rebound shot to keep the game tied 1-1. Cohn would then make another save in the 62nd minute when she saved a shot by Moll.
Wofford would create a good chance to take the lead in the 65th minute when Brackett would have a shot blocked by a Bulldog defender inside the 18-yard box.
In the 70th minute, Samford would take the lead 2-1 off of Taule's header from five-yards out off Jordan Johnson for her fifth goal of the season.
The Terriers would then create another chance to tie the game back off a shot from Brackett that was saved in the 71st minute. Cohn would then make a huge one-on-one save in the 74th minute off Amanda Abbott's shot to keep Wofford in the match.
Samford would continue pressure of the rest of the half creating multiple opportunities to extend its lead and Cohn made some big saves to keep the Terriers in the match. Wofford would get one final chance in the 84th minute when junior defender Mary Kathryn Macklen would have her header off a corner kick just go wide of the goal.
For the match, Samford would outshoot the Terriers 24-8 and win the corner battle 6-4.
In goal for the Terriers, Cohn had a huge game keeping Wofford in the match but she fell to her second loss of the season. She faced 24 Samford shots and made a season-high 12 saves. For the Bulldogs, Montgomery faced eight Terrier shots and made three saves earning the victory.
The women's soccer team is back in action on Sunday October 6th when they return to Snyder Field to take on Southern Conference opponent University of Tennessee at Chattanooga at 2:00 pm.
