SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s basketball team Western Carolina 34-24 in the second half en route to a 54-50 win Monday night in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Wofford (7-14, 2-11) overcame a 26-20 halftime deficit to Western Carolina (6-17, 4-10) to earn the win. The Terriers also picked up their first win of the season when trailing at the five minute mark and fourth win when trailing at the half. Wofford is now 4-4 in games decided by less than five points and it was their 12th game decided by less than ten points this season.
Shaune Terry scored 11 of Western Carolina's first 17 points as the Catamounts took a 17-3 lead at the six and a half minute mark. Rachel Brittenham made two free throws for Wofford with 6:21 on the clock ending an eight and a half minute scoreless streak for the Terriers.
The free throws sent Wofford on an 8-0 run highlighted by a three from Brittenham following a Michelle Merritt offensive rebound that cut the Catamount lead to 17-11 with 4:31 left in the half.
Following a Western Carolina basket, Jordan Frazier knocked down a three to start a 5-0 Wofford run that cut the lead to 19-16, two minutes later.
Western Carolina answered with 5-2 to extend the lead to 26-18, but Wofford's Chanel Stokes was fouled with three tenths of a second left sending her to the line. She made both free throws to trim the lead to 26-20 at the half.
The two teams traded baskets over the first four minutes of the second half as the Catamounts held a 32-25 lead following two Diamond Honnicutt free throws, but Wofford responded with a 7-0 run highlighted by a three from Frazier to tie the game at 32 with just under 13 minutes to play.
After trading 4-0 runs, Wofford took its first lead of the game, 39-38, on a Chanel Stokes three from the top of the key only to have Alex Abraham answer for Western Carolina on the next possession with a basket to send the Catamounts on a 5-0 run and give the Catamounts a 44-39 lead with 6:45 remaining.
Wofford cut the lead down to one point, 44-43, following a Logan Morris layup and two free throws from Wrightson at the five-minute mark. Following two Terry free throws, Morris tied the game at 46 with a three-point play a minute and a half later.
Wofford ended the final 4:30 with an 8-4 run to earn the win as Morgan Wrightson led the way with five points including a corner three and Morris sealed the four-point win, 54-50, with a free throw.
After committing 12 turnovers in the first half, Wofford only turned the ball over twice in the second half. Western Carolina had seven turnovers at the break and ended the game with 17 turnovers leading to 12 Terrier points.
The Terriers went 33 percent from the floor and 36 percent from three, 5-of-14, while, while the Catamounts shot 41 percent overall and 8 percent from three, 1-of-12. Wofford finished 17-of-24 from the free throw line, while Western Carolina made only five of its 12 free throws.
Motley and Wrightson paced Wofford with 12 points each. Wrightson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Brittenham followed with nine points, while Frazier and Morris chipped in eight points apiece.
Terry led Western Carolina off the bench with 21 points and nine rebounds. She finished the game 9-of-13 from the floor.
The Terries start a three-game road trip at Appalachian State on Saturday, February 16 at 2 p.m. for their next game.
