CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Wofford trailed Chattanooga the entire night and was down double digits with 11:42 to play.
Â
Then Karl Cochran happened.
Â
The senior out of Marietta, Georgia scored 24 points through the final 11 and a half minutes. He shot 8-of-9 down the stretch and made six 3-pointers en route to a career-high 33 points, leading the Terriers to a 68-64 Southern Conference victory, Monday night at The McKenzie Arena.
Â
After Chattanooga led from the game's first basket, the Terriers tied it for the first time at the 5:57 mark. Chattanooga responded with back-to-back 3-pointers, but Wofford would not go down. Sophomore Jaylen Allen was good from deep and Cochran hit the next two to give the Terriers the lead for the first time with 3:12 to play.
Â
The two teams went shot for shot from there. The lead changed hands four times until a Cochran triple put the Terriers in front for good with 57 seconds to play. Chattanooga turned the ball over on the next possession and Cochran iced the game away with his sixth bomb of the half in the final seconds.
Â
Cochran finished the night shooting 12-of-21 and 6-of-9 from three, adding five steals, three rebounds, three assists and a block.
Â
"Holy smokes – I don't think I've ever witnessed something like that in my life," said Wofford head coach Mike Young, who earned his 200th career victory. "He was unbelievable. All I can say is I'm glad he's on our team."
Â
The win improves the Terriers to 11-4 and 2-0 in Southern Conference play. It's the best 15-game start of the program's Division I era. Meanwhile, Chattanooga was handed its first loss of the conference season, falling to 9-7, 2-1 SoCon.
Â
Senior Lee Skinner was a key contributor with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds, as was junior C.J. Neumann, who matched Skinner's eight boards to set a new career-high. The duo combined to help Wofford outrebound Chatt 34-31. Sophomore point Eric Garcia was spectacular, yet again, with a broken jaw, going for five assists and just one turnover in 31 minutes.
Â
For the Mocs, senior Casey Jones scored a team-high 21 points to lead a trio of double-figure scorers. Justin Tuoyo had a career-high 19 points and matched another with a game-high 13 rebounds. Ronrico White scored 10.
Â
Wofford connected on nine of their final 10 3-pointers to finish the game 9-of-18 from long range and 44.6 percent from the floor. After a rough first half, the Terriers shot 16-of-29 (55.2 pct.) in the final 20 minutes, but were still outpaced by UTC's mark of 49 percent for the game.
Â
Chattanooga raced out to a 20-6 lead at the 7:50 mark of the first half. Wofford was just 3-of-13 from the field and had turned the ball over seven times in the first 12 minutes.
Â
Wofford began to warm up and finished the half by hitting six of the last 14 attempts. It was enough to prevent the Mocs from building a larger lead, as the deficit was 30-20 at the intermission.
Â
Tuoyo had nine of his 13 rebounds at the break and Chatt was outrebounding Wofford 19-17. The Terriers were 9-of-27 from the field and led by just a half dozen from Skinner.
Â
UTC retook its largest lead of the game when Pryor was good inside to make it 39-25 at the 14:23 mark. A big 14-2 Wofford run followed, giving the Terriers momentum for the first time all night. Cochran scored the final five of the run, bringing Wofford within a bucket and with a few ticks over 10 minutes still remaining.
Â
Chatt put a stop to the bleeding, but could not cover Cochran. The senior, who moved up to No. 9 all-time in scoring, created his own space and hit every shot he took. It didn't matter who was guarding or how far from the basket he was – the ball found a way in and Wofford found its way to the win column.
Â
The Terriers return home on Thursday when they host VMI inside Benjamin Johnson Arena at 7 p.m.
Â
