SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Midfielder
Hayley Younginer scored a game-winning goal with 3:21 left in the match to give the women's soccer team a 1-0 win over East Tennessee State Sunday at Snyder Field.
Â
A breakaway opportunity presented itself with Younginer and midfielder
Hannah Washko playing two on one against a Buccaneer defender. Washko's first shot attempt got past keeper Jasmine Elliot but hit the crossbar. Younginer then nailed home the rebound shot off an ETSU defender and into the net.
Â
Younginer now has a team-high five goals for the season, and Washko earned her second assist of the season.
Â
ETSU (9-6-1, 4-2-1 SoCon) had their chances to score in the match, taking 22 shots compared to the Terriers' six shot attempts. ETSU also took five corner kicks compared to Wofford's one corner attempt.
Â
Terrier goalkeeper
Alex Carroll however was able to keep the ball out of the net, saving all eight shots on goal in the match.
Â
"
Alex Carroll played very, very well," said head coach
Amy Kiah after the match. "Our keepers have been steadily getting better. All three are technically freshmen, and that's a hard position to step into as a freshman right away. They've all three done a great job of pushing each other, and it shows."
Â
The Terriers (4-6-4, 2-3-2 SoCon) hosted Senior Day festivities before the match, honoring the six seniors in midfielder
Mary Beth Bleekrode, midfielder
Mary Katherine Bradley, defender
Lucy Etro, forward
Carlyn Fralick, midfielder
Emily Gaid and defender
Katherine Whisenhunt.
Â
"This win was for the seniors, and that's what we talked about," Coach Kiah said. "They've been a huge part of our mentality this whole season, our fighting mentality, and that's what we did today. We fought for 90 minutes against a quality team and were able to pull out a win. Very excited for this team and definitely for the seniors to send them out [at home] on a win."
Â
The win increases Wofford's lead in the all-time series vs. ETSU to 5-1-1 at Snyder Field and 6-4-1 overall. The Terriers have won two straight home matches against the Buccaneers.
Â
Wofford has a week to prepare for their final two regular season matches, both on the road. The team plays at Mercer Friday at 7 p.m. before finishing the regular season Sunday at The Citadel at 2 p.m.
