SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior forward
Grayson Pinholster recorded her first career double-double as the women's basketball team defeated the North Carolina Central Eagles 60-37 Tuesday afternoon in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Â
Pinholster led the Terriers (3-7) in scoring and rebounding with 14 points and 10 boards, tying her career-high in rebounds. Nine of her 10 rebounds were on the defensive end. She had eight of her points and rebounds in the first half alone and shot 6-8 from the field for the game.
Â
"I thought Grayson did an outstanding job controlling the defensive glass," Head Coach
Edgar I. Farmer, Jr., said after the game. "Her length was a problem for them, limiting them to one shot. And then she really got going on the offensive end, and that really opened up a lot of things for us."
Â
With the win over the Eagles (1-7, 1-1 MEAC), the Terriers are on a two-game winning streak and a three-game winning streak at home.
Â
Both teams struggled to score in the first period, with Terrier guard
Jordan Frazier's layup being the only points through the first 3:30 of the game. Wofford guard
Maria Corella hit a three with one second left to beat the first period buzzer and give the Terriers a 10-8 lead.
Â
The Eagles took the lead on their first possession of the second period on a Kristin Askew three pointer. Three possessions later, Pinholster grabbed her lone offensive rebound of the game and got fouled as she sank the ensuing layup. She hit the free throw to complete the three-point play and give the Terriers a 13-11 advantage.
Â
Pinholster hit two more jumpers on consecutive possessions to extend Wofford's lead to six and the Terriers took a 25-15 lead into halftime.
Â
The Terriers built on the momentum and did not let the Eagles get within single digits the rest of the way, outscoring the Eagles 35-22 in the second half. The Eagles shot 12-54 (22.2 percent) for the game compared to the Terriers' 22-60 (36.7 percent) mark.
Â
"We talked a lot about playing great team defense and limiting them to one shot because they are a good team on the offensive glass," Farmer said. "I thought we did an excellent job of following the blueprint, and I also thought we did a nice job of controlling tempo, getting good shots in both the first and second half, and getting stops on the defensive end. Really proud of our group today."
Â
Freshman guard
Chloe Wanink chipped in 12 points as well for Wofford, while forward
Kentra Washington contributed on both ends with five points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Â
Guard Chantal Thomas led the Eagles offensively with 10 points, while forward Deja McCain added seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Â
Both teams combined for close to 50 turnovers in the game, with Wofford having the advantage 21-25. The Terriers scored 22 points off Eagle turnovers and also outscored the eagles in the paint 28-10.
Â
The home stand continues Friday afternoon when the Terriers face Radford University in the Benjo.
Â
"Radford is an outstanding basketball team," Coach Farmer said. "We got to go back and improve on what we did today, bring the same type of effort and intensity on Friday and continue to build on what we are doing."
Â
Tip-off Friday afternoon is at 12 p.m., and is the final home game of Wofford's Holiday Hoops Week slate.
