Second-Half Surge Propels Men's Basketball Past UNCG

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A 52-point second half in which Wofford shot 54 percent and had 11 assists to just a single turnover helped the Terriers overcome a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat UNC Greensboro, 77-62, Thursday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

It took just 4:24 for the Terriers to erase UNCG's 35-25 halftime lead. After shooting 8-of-22 in the first half, Wofford began the second 8-of-11, capping a 20-6 run on a Karl Cochran 3-pointer to go up four.

The Spartans never led again, but hung around for quite a while. The Terriers led by no more than five over the next 10 minutes and the Spartans tied it up three times. The final tie came with just 3:38 left, 58-58.

It was all Terriers from there. Sophomore Eric Garcia hit a triple that brought the home crowd to their feet and Cochran followed with another two possessions later. By the time UNCG scored its next basket, less than a minute remained and Wofford's lead had grown to double figures. The Spartans tried to get back in it by putting the Terriers at the line, but Wofford answered the call by making 10-of-12 down the stretch.

Four Terriers scored in double figures, led by a game-high 18 points from Cochran. The senior, who ranks seventh on Wofford's all-time scoring list, scored 16 of his 18 in the second half, going 6-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-6 from three through the final 20 minutes. Senior Lee Skinner had 15 points and matched Gordon with a game-high eight rebounds. Garcia had 13 and junior Spencer Collins wound up with 10, adding a game-high five assists.

UNCG (8-20, 4-11 SoCon) got a game-high 16 points from RJ White. Leading scorer Tevon Saddler, who was held scoreless by the Terriers in Greensboro, shot 6-of-12 to score 13 points. Marvin Smith hit four 3-pointers, all in the first half, but did not score in the second half and ended the game with a dozen.

The win moves Wofford to 22-6 overall, which stands alone as the best 28-game mark in program history. The Terriers (13-2 SoCon) also maintained their one-game lead in the Southern Conference standings after Chattanooga (12-3 SoCon) defeated Mercer (10-5 SoCon) Thursday night.

"What a gutsy second-half performance, but it was a struggle" said Wofford head coach Mike Young. "UNCG came in here with a nice plan and clearly outplayed us through the first 20 minutes. I haven't had to prod this team very often, but we were not engaged, we were flat and very lethargic defensively.

"We came back in the second and put together a great 20 minutes. Greensboro hung with us, even after we took the lead, and I tip my hat to them and Coach Miller for a good ball game. It was a challenge."

UNCG hit a half dozen 3-pointers and shot 60 percent from deep in the first half. Four of the six makes were by Marvin Smith, who entered the game averaging just 3.7 points and had only reached double figures twice on the year.

Wofford weathered UNCG's hot shooting to trail by just five with less than five minutes until halftime. However, the Terriers went without a field goal through the final five minutes. Senior Lee Skinner's layup with 5:18 left was the last bucket and the Spartans led by as many as 11. A Justin Gordon free throw in the final seconds brought the margin back to 10.

The Terriers celebrate Senior Night on Saturday and will be looking to avenge a loss earlier in the year against The Citadel. Seniors Karl Cochran, Lee Skinner and John Swinton will be honored in a pregame ceremony, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Wofford Notes:
- Wofford 22-6 overall record marks its best 28-game record in program history.
- Cochran hit four 3-pointers and is just two shy of breaking Ian Chadwick's program record of 299 in a career.
-  The Terriers are 13-2 in Southern Conference play, marking their best 15-game SoCon record in their 18 years in the league.
- It was the second time this season Wofford came back from a 10-point halftime deficit to win. The Terriers trailed Chattanooga 30-20 on January 5, before coming back to win on the road 68-64.
- Wofford earned a season sweep of UNCG, defeating the Spartans 58-42 on January 29 in Greensboro. The Terriers now lead the all-time series 23-11.
