Football Holds Second Spring Scrimmage

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford College football team held the second scrimmage of spring practice on Saturday morning at Gibbs Stadium. Despite the cold weather, the offense scored four touchdowns and the defense scored on an interception return. The team ran approximately 60 plays, divided into four quarters and an overtime period.

"I thought there was a lot of good," said head coach Mike Ayers. "Defensively we did a lot of good stuff. Offensively we bounced back and responded. We were hoping in the four quarter scenario to come up with at least 28 points. I liked the way that a lot of the quarterbacks responded. We have guys who can make plays. We are trying our best to come up with an offense that can give ourselves the best chance and when you look at the amount of work that has been put in, I think there has been a great deal of positive work every day. The attitude has been excellent and the kids have come to work. We are looking forward to looking at the film and seeing where we need to get better. We have one more left and will see how it all turns out. We are looking forward to the season. "

The scrimmage began with Michael Weimer at quarterback. Will Gay picked up a first down, but Tyler Vaughn had a tackle for a loss of ten yards. Ray Smith had a nine-yard run before a sack by Jim Dolinak. Jaleel Green intercepted a pass a returned it 55 yards for the first touchdown of the day. Lorenzo Long added a first down run and Will Gay had a five-yard run before the end of the first quarter.

Brad Butler was under center in the second quarter of the scrimmage. R.J. Taylor had two first down catches. Brandon Curtis and Tyler Vaughn had tackles for loss. After a 35-yard reception by Paul Nelson, Ellis Pace scored from eight yards out.

In the third quarter, Evan Jacks was in at quarterback. Chase Nelson had a ten-yard reception, but Boston Bryant came up with a fumble recovery on the play. Evan Jacks added a 15-yard run and he converted a fourth-and-one with a two-yard gain. After an incomplete pass in the endzone, Jacks ran the ball in from five yards for the touchdown. Ben Bruggeworth handled the extra points and was 11-of 13 on his attempts during the scrimmage. He was also 2-of-4 on 38-yard field goal attempts.

Brandon Goodson entered the scrimmage in the fourth quarter. In the first three plays, he found R.J. Taylor twice for a total of 19 yards and was sacked once by Lincoln Stewart. After a first down was gained by a pass interference call, Goodson found R.J. Taylor for a first down. Lorenzo Long had a first down run and he capped the drive with an eight-yard touchdown run up the middle.

In overtime, Hunter Windham picked up 20 yards on the first play. Ellis Pace gained four yards, then scored on a one-yard run to end the scrimmage.

On the injury front, numerous players were held out of the scrimmage including S Cole Higbie (back), RB Nick Colvin (knee), K David Marvin (knee), LB Terrance Morris (shoulder), TE Taylor Bragg (shoulder), OL Robert Massey (knee), QB David Howerton (shoulder), RB Andre Stoddard (knee), LB Michael Roach (foot), OL T.J. Chamberlin (ankle), Daryl Vining (knee), and S Michael Sarafianos (shoulder). All players are expected to be available when fall practice begins in August.

The scrimmage was part of the Football Letterman's Reunion weekend. Over 150 lettermen and their families were back on campus for the event. "We had a lot of old hats that came back and I am excited about seeing them all," said Ayers. "When you are here 28 years that is a bunch of guys. We hopefully will get a chance to see them all."
