Brenton Bersin Re-Signs With Carolina Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carolina Panthers have re-signed wide receiver Brenton Bersin, center Brian Folkerts and linebacker Ben Jacobs to one-year contracts, and running back Fozzy Whittaker to a two-year contract, the team announced Monday. Each of these players would have otherwise been potential exclusive rights designees at the start of the new NFL year on Tuesday, March 10.

Bersin played in 15 regular season games with one start for Carolina in 2014, recording 13 catches for 151 yards and one touchdown. Bersin also contributed on special teams, returning 14 punts for 86 yards and seven kickoffs for 167 yards. He also saw action in two postseason games.

He originally signed with the Panthers as a rookie free agent in 2012 and spent training camp with the team. He appeared in one preseason game before being released. He was on the team's practice squad for the 2013 season.

Bersin, from Charlotte, N.C., caught 26 passes for 445 yards and two touchdowns in 2011 at Wofford. He also had twelve carries for 169 yards and returned five punts. At The Citadel he returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown, which was the fourth longest in school history.

In his collegiate career, he is fifth in school history with 1,567 receiving yards. Bersin is tied for third in school history with 15 touchdown receptions. In the 2010 season, he had 32 receptions for 703 yards and nine touchdowns. The 703 yards were the third most in a single season in school history, while the nine touchdowns tied the school record mark held by Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson.

Bersin is one of three former Wofford players expected to take part in training camps this summer. Kicker Kasey Redfern signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on January 29, 2015 after spending the 2014 training camp with the Jaguars. Linebacker Alvin Scioneaux signed with the San Diego Chargers in 2014 and spent the season on injured reserve due to a knee injury suffered in a preseason game.
