He selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 15th round of the MLB Draft in 2011. Cornely was the 476th overall pick in the draft.

After starting his career with Danville, Cornely played for Lynchburg and Rome in 2012. He spent the 2013 season with Lynchburg (A Advanced) and in 2014 was 7-3 overall with 7 saves for the Mississippi Braves (AA).

"We are so excited for John to earn the promotion to Major League Baseball with the Atlanta Braves," said Wofford head coach Todd Interdonato. "His career at Wofford was successful but his continued contribution to our program since his graduation has been exceptional. We are proud to have John as an alum of our program and wish him the very best at the highest level."

Cornely becomes just the fourth Terrier to reach the major leagues. He joins Frank Ellerbee (Washington Senators 1919-21, St. Louis Browns 1921-24, Cleveland Indians 1924), Don Buddin (Boston Red Sox 1956, 1958–61, Houston Colt .45s 1962 and Detroit Tigers 1962), and Johnny Boozer (Philadelphia Phillies, 1962-64, 1966-69).
