Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. – Four Terriers scored in double figures but it wasn't enough to propel Wofford to a victory as the Terriers (0-1) fell 91-69 to LSU (1-0) on Saturday afternoon in the season opener.
Â
"It was a pleasure to compete against the LSU Tigers," said Wofford head coach
Mike Young. "The first week is hard. Teams don't have a lot of film. You're trying to mesh new kids into your program. I thought we caught them by surprise on a couple of things.
Â
Also, we scored the ball. It's an easier game when the ball is going in the basket. We didn't sustain the energy when they played better than we did, but as can happen, their size and speed kind of took over a little bit. We weren't quite tough enough to withstand that and they punched us out."
Â
Freshman
Nathan Hoover, seeing his first career action as a Terrier, led Wofford with 18 points, marking the second consecutive season a freshman has led Wofford in the opener. Hoover, who came off the bench, was 5-11 from the field including 3-4 from three-point range.
Â
Cameron Jackson and
Fletcher Magee followed with 14 points apiece. Jackson went 6-11 in the game while Magee finished 6-18 from the floor and 2-8 from beyond the arc.
Eric Garcia was the fourth Terrier in double figures with 13 points with 10 of those coming in the first half.
Â
Wofford held the lead for 19 minutes and 11 seconds and has as big as a nine point lead in the first half and the Terriers took a 43-39 lead into the half. The Terriers shot 53% from the field while holding the Tigers to 45.5%.Â
Â
The Tigers would come out hot out of the half and with Wofford up 51-49, LSU would go on a 10-0 run to takes a 59-51 lead and wouldn't look back. LSU outscored Wofford 52-26 in the second half.
Â
"We played a pretty good ball game in the first half," said Young. "I thought Coach (Johnny) Jones and his staff made a couple of adjustments coming out of the locker room to start the second half that hurt us a little bit. They gave us a couple of looks offensively that we didn't handle very well and that's a credit to Johnny and his team."
Â
LSU finished with five players in double figures and were led by their big man Duop Reath who had a game high 23 points and 14 rebounds. Reath's teammate, Aaron Epps, shot 70% (7-10) from the field and 75% (3-4) from three-point range to help propel LSU. Wayde Sims finished with 13 points and eight rebounds while Antonio Blakeney and Skyler Mays finished with 10 points apiece.Â
Â
Overall, LSU shot 52% in the game and though the Terriers hit 53% from the field in the first half, Wofford shot 37% in the game.
Â
"We have a long way to go, but I'm very encouraged with some of the things that I saw against a good opponent and on the road," said Young. "We'll get back to South Carolina. We'll keep pounding away at it. We'll continue to get better as we move forward and so will Coach Jones and his Tiger team."
Â
Wofford returns to action at home against Allen University on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. The game kicks off the final season in Wofford's Benjamin Johnson Arena.Â
