Twelve Terriers Earn All-Southern Conference

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced the 2016 football postseason awards today (Nov. 22). Selections include the coaches' all-conference teams and specialty award winners in addition to the league's all-freshman team. The Southern Conference Sports Media Association also selected its football all-conference team and specialty awards for the 2016 season.

Overall, Wofford had eight players earn first or second team honors from the coaches or media and four players were named to the All-Freshman Team. The eight Terriers honored are the most since the 2012 season when nine players were recognized. The four named All-Freshman are the most in school history, topping the three in 2010 and 2014. Wofford ended the season 8-3 overall and 6-2 in the Southern Conference to finish second. The Terriers advanced to the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the seventh time and first since 2012.

Earning first team honors from the Southern Conference Coaches were RB Lorenzo Long, OL Anton Warby, DL Miles Brown, DL Tyler Vaughn, and PK David Marvin. Second team honors went to OL Roo Daniels, DB Jaleel Green and P David Marvin. DB George Gbesee, DL Mikel Horton, LB Datavious Wilson and LB Jireh Wilson earned All-Freshman Team honors.

In the media voting, first team honors went to RB Lorenzo Long, OL Anton Wahrby, DL Tyler Vaughn, DB Jaleel Green and David Marvin as punter and kicker. Second team recognition went to OL Roo Daniels, OL Dequan Miller and DL Miles Brown.

Brown, a sophomore from Cheverly, Maryland, started all eleven games at defensive end. He was second on the team with 10.5 tackles for loss and had two sacks. He was part of a defensive line that is ranked second in the nation in rushing defense.

Daniels, a junior from Columbia, South Carolina, started all eleven games at center. He finished third on the team in knockdown blocks and paved the way for the nation's fifth-ranked rushing game.

Green, a senior from Jacksonville, Florida, started all eleven games at strong safety. He has five interceptions on the season to lead the team and the conference. He also ranks second on the team in total tackles with 49 on the season.

Long, a senior from Pensacola, Florida, started all eleven games at fullback. He led the team and the Southern Conference with 1,194 rushing yards, while also leading the league in rushing touchdown with 14.

Marvin, a junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, played all eleven games at kicker and punter. As kicker, he was 15-of-19 on field goals and 36-of-36 on PATs for 81 points, which is second on the team. He has made five field goals of over 50 yards, including a school and SoCon record 57 yards (twice). He also has 32 touchbacks on kickoffs. At punter, he led the league in punting average at 46.8 yards and the Terriers lead the nation in net punting.

Miller, a senior from Columbia, South Carolina, started ten of eleven games at right guard. He was fifth on the team in knockdown blocks and is part of an offensive line that allowed only three sacks all season to rank second in the nation.

Vaughn, a junior from McDonough, Georgia, started all eleven games at defensive end. His 14.0 tackles for loss lead the team and are second in the Southern Conference, while his 7.0 sacks are also second in the league.

Wahrby, a senior from Karlskrona, Sweden, started all eleven games at right tackle. He led the team in knockdown blocks and was part of an offensive line that allowed only three sacks on the season and blocked for the nation's fifth-ranked rushing game.

Among the All-Freshman team honorees, Mikel Horton (Lexington, Kentucky) started nine games at nose tackle and had a tackle for loss. Jireh Wilson (Calhoun, Georgia) played in all eleven games with 27 tackles and three tackles for loss. Datavious Wilson (Hartsville, South Carolina) leads the team in tackles with 74, including six tackles for loss and two sacks.  George Gbesee (Murfreesboro, Tennessee) started ten games at cornerback and is second on the team in pass break-ups with eight, along with 39 tackles.

As part of the balloting, coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players or themselves. Due to ties in the voting at offensive line, defensive back and return specialist, the all-conference second team features three additional members.

Chattanooga led all schools with 11 all-conference selections. The Citadel placed 10 on the all-conference teams, while Samford had nine and Wofford earned eight honorees. Seven of the league's nine schools had at least one first-team all-conference selection. Eight of the nine teams had multiple players named to the second team.
