SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and held on late to defeat Coastal Carolina, 67-62, on Monday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Â
After taking a 10-point lead into halftime, the Chanticleers fought back and cut the Terrier lead to as little as five late in the fourth quarter. However, Wofford continued to play solid defense to earn the victory.
Â
"This one was really important for us," head coach
Jimmy Garrity said. "The crowd was awesome and I'm really proud of our team for grinding it out. Coastal is a tough, physical team, so I'm really pleased with how we handled adversity and showed a lot of toughness down the stretch."
Â
With the win, the Terriers have now won six straight home games, dating back to last season. The team's six game home winning streak is the longest in the program's Division I history, which dates back to 1995. The Terriers win over Coastal Carolina is the first in program history. The Chanticleers had won the previous nine matchups.
Â
Senior guard
Maria Corella led the three Terriers that finished in double figures. Corella poured in 14 points and made a season high four three pointers on just five attempts from beyond the arc. She also added three assists and a season high three steals. Forward
Kentra Washington displayed her versatile game on Monday night, scoring 11 points and adding seven rebounds, two assists, and a season high three blocks.
Â
Just one game after scoring a career high 12 points, junior guard
Amoshia Blakeney came off the bench and scored in double figures again, adding 10 points, including a buzzer beating three at the end of the third quarter that put the Terriers up 10 points heading into the final period.
Â
"I'm happy how well the team is playing together right now," Blakeney said. "When you know you have to step up for your team, it comes easy, especially with all the support I get from the coaching staff."
Â
For the second straight game, the Terriers defense held their opponent without a point in the first four plus minutes. This time, the strong defensive effort allowed Wofford to score the game's first nine points. Overall, Coastal Carolina was held to just 33% shooting in the first quarter.
Â
Wofford increased their lead to 10 points in the second quarter thanks to six points on three of three shooting for
Marissa Bayer.
Â
The Chanticleers began to cut into the Terrier lead late in the third quarter, but Blakeney's personal 6-0 run moved the Wofford lead back out to 10 points. In the final minute of the period, Blakeney converted a layup, drew the foul, and made the free throw for the three-point play. Then, on the next possession, her buzzer beating three crushed the momentum that Coastal Carolina had gained throughout the quarter.
Â
Despite making just two field goals in the fourth quarter, the Terriers were able to sink 10 free throws to seal the victory.
Â
For the game, Wofford had 24 fast break points, compared to just eight for the Chanticleers. The Terriers also received 25 points from their bench, with Bayer providing eight and
Kelsey Lambdin adding seven in addition to Blakeney's 10.
Â
Up next, the Terriers will play their next six games on the road. The six game road swing begins this Saturday, Dec. 10, against UNC Asheville at 4:30 p.m.
