SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team rolled to a 116-56 victory over UVA-Wise on Tuesday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Â
The 60-point margin of victory is the second largest for the Terriers in the SoCon era (1997-98), behind only a 61-point win over Tennessee Wesleyan on Nov. 22, 1997.
Â
"We played the right way and our movement was better," head coach
Mike Young said. "We did a good job of reversing the ball and I thought we played inside-out a lot better."
Â
Six Wofford players scored in double figures, led by
Fletcher Magee with 24 and
Ryan Sawvell with 23. The Terriers had not had six players score in double figures since March 1, 2008 against The Citadel.
Â
For Magee, his 24 points were a season high. The sophomore guard also set season highs in field goals made (nine) and three pointers made (five).
Â
"I thought we moved the ball a lot better tonight," Magee said. "It was good to be able to get some open looks."
Â
Ryan Sawvell added 23 points, just one shy of the career high that he set last week against Mars Hill (Nov. 29). Sawvell finished 10 of 12 from the field and a perfect three of three from behind the arc.
Â
Joining them in double figures were
Eric Garcia,
Nathan Hoover,
Justin Tucker, and
Cameron Jackson. Garcia delivered 14 points on a perfect seven of seven from the foul line. He also added seven assists compared to zero turnovers. Hoover scored 12 points, reaching double figures for the first time since the first game of his college career at LSU (11/12). The freshman guard knocked down two three pointers. Tucker set a career high with 12 points on a perfect six of six from the floor, while Jackson returned to the starting lineup and scored 10 points with four assists.
Â
"As you play more games, everything starts to slow down and the game begins to come more naturally to you," Hoover said. "It's fun to see us start to figure out how to play with each other on offense and defense."
Â
After falling behind 3-2 in the game's opening minute, the Terriers quickly took the lead and never looked back. Due to a 65% shooting first half, Wofford took a comfortable 60-32 lead into halftime. In the second half, they shot the ball even better, converting nine out of 10 three point attempts and 22 of 29 field goals (75.9%).
Â
For the game, the Terriers field goal percentage stood at 70.3% (45-64), which is the second best field goal percentage in program history, which dates back to 1905. The only better shooting night they had was in the 1978-79 season, when they shot 70.5% in a win against Limestone.
Â
The team also had an outstanding night sharing the ball, as their 34 assists is fourth most in SoCon history. In addition, they enjoyed a 45-20 rebounding advantage and received 45 bench points.
Â
Up next, the Terriers will head to Fort Worth, Texas to take on TCU this Saturday, Dec. 10 at 5 p.m.
