Baseball Downs Rider 12-4

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Friday night, the Wofford College baseball team defeated Rider 12-4 at Russell C. King Field. The Broncs scored three runs in the first inning, but the Terriers answered with three in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Wofford took the lead in the second inning and added four runs in the sixth to pull away for the victory.
 
Wofford opens at 5-0 for the second straight season, while Rider is 0-1 after their season opener. The Terrier stole eleven bases and took advantage of nine walks and five balks in the game. Alec Paradowski and Demetrius Jennings each had two hits, while Paradowski and Carson Waln each drove in a pair of runs. The Broncs were led by Tyler Kaiser with two hits.   
 
In the first inning, the Brocs led off with a walk and a double. A wild pitch with one out allowed a run to score. With two outs, back-to-back infield singles drove in runs to take a 3-0 lead before a strikeout ended the top half.
 
Alec Paradowski led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right center. A sacrifice fly by Max McDougald drove in Paradowski for a 3-1 score. With Kody Ruedisili on first after a single, Carson Waln hit a double to right field and he moved to third on the throw as Ruedisili scored. With Cody Miller at bat, Carson Waln stole home to tie the game at 3-3.
 
After Rider was retired in order in the top of the second, Demetrius Jennings singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Alec Paradowski reached on an error that enabled Jennings to score to take a 4-3 lead. Max McDougald added a single and Brett Hash walked to load the bases with two outs, but a strikeout ended the second inning.
 
Rider went in order and Wofford stranded one in the third inning. The Broncs left one runner on base in the top of the fourth inning. Alec Paradowski led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. He moved to second on a balk and stole third, while back-to-back walks loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by Carson Waln gave Wofford a 5-3 advantage, but two Terriers were left on base.
 
The Broncs got one run back in the top of the fifth inning when Dalton Mayberry hit an RBI single with two runners on base. Wofford led off the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back walks. After advancing the runners on a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch plated one run. A ground out by Alec Paradowski added a second run for a 7-4 lead at the end of five innings. Rider was retired in order in the top of the sixth inning.
 
The first two Wofford batters in the bottom of the sixth inning reached on a hit by pitch and walk. After a double steal, a wild pitch added a run for an 8-4 score. A balk plated another run and with runners on the corners a sacrifice bunt made it 10-4. An RBI single up the middle by Demetrius Jennings pushed the score to 11-4.
 
In the top of the seventh, the Broncs loaded the bases on two singles and a walk with one out. Back-to-back strikeouts ended the scoring chance for Rider. The Terriers left one on base in the bottom of the seventh and Rider was retired in order in the top of the eighth. With runners at first and second and two outs, Reed Massey had a pinch hit double down the left field line in his first career at bat to drive in a run. Wofford took a 12-4 lead into the top of the ninth inning. The Broncs were retired in order to end the game.
 
Wofford pitcher Matt Milburn (2-0) threw five innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He walked three batters and had seven strikeouts. Jordan Accetta went two innings and did not allow a run on two hits, along with tying a career-high with five strikeouts. Grant Byers threw the final two innings and did not allow a hit with one strikeout.
 
Nick Margevicius (1-0) started for Rider and went 3.1 innings with five runs allowed on seven hits, along with four strikeouts. Anthony Arneth threw an inning with two runs allowed. Jordan Silverman allowed four runs in an inning with two strikeouts. Dylan Simcik worked 2.1 innings with one run allowed on two hits. Tanner Clifford went the final third of an inning with a hit and a strikeout.
 
The Terriers will host Evansville on Saturday and UNC Asheville on Sunday at Russell C. King Field to close out the weekend.
