Baseball Rallies For 14-8 Win Over Lafayette

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Tuesday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 14-8 win over Lafayette at Russell C. King Field. With the game tied at eight in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Terriers loaded the bases with one out. A walk and single drove in two runs and with two outs, a double and a single added four more as Wofford earned the win.
 
Wofford is 15-7 on the season, while Lafayette is 4-10 overall. The Terriers were led by Brett Hash with two hits and four RBIs, while Alec Paradowski drove in three on a home run. The Leopards had two hits and three RBIs from Campbell Lipe, while Jackson Kramer scored three runs. The teams combined for ten extra base hits in the contest, including four home runs.
 
After the Leopards were retired in order in the top of the first inning, Alec Paradowski led off with a walk. With one out, McClain Bradley had a single and moved to second on the throw as Paradowski reached third base. A double by Brett Hash to left center drove in both runners for a 2-0 lead. In the top of the second with two outs, A.J. Kloehn got one run back for Lafayette with a solo home run.
 
Derek Hirsch had a triple with two outs in the bottom of the second, but a strikeout ended the scoring chance for the Terriers. The Leopards had one runner reach base in the third inning, but he was caught stealing. McClain Bradley walked and then Brett Hash blasted a ball over the fence in left field for a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. It was his third home run of the season. Wofford left one runner on base to end the third inning.
 
A walk opened the top of the fourth for Lafayette and with one out an RBI double by Campbell Lipe made it a 4-2 game. A hit by pitch and single loaded the bases for Andrew Landolfi, who drove in a pair of runs on a single to tie the game at 4-4. A fly ball and caught stealing ended the top half for the Leopards. Wofford had runners on the corners after a single by Kody Ruedisili and a walk by Derek Hirsch. Hirsch moved to second on a wild pitch and then on a full count Alec Paradowski hit a ball that bounced off the top of the fence in right center for a 3-run homer. Wofford took a 7-4 lead on the third home run of the season for Paradowski. An RBI single by Cody Miller added a run and the Terriers had an 8-4 lead at the end of four innings.
 
Lafayette added a solo home run by Jackson Kramer with two outs in the top of the fifth inning. Back-to-back doubles made it an 8-6 game in the middle of the fifth. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the fifth and both teams were retired in order in the sixth inning.
 
The Leopards led off the seventh inning with a single and the runner moved to second on a wild pitch. A fielding error allowed one run to score and an RBI single tied the game at 8-8 at the seventh inning stretch. Wofford stranded one runner in the bottom of the seventh after a walk and in the top of the eighth Lafayette left one on base following a two out single.
 
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Max McDougald walked and Mack Nathanson came in to pinch run. A single through the right side by McClain Bradley gave Wofford runner on the corners. Bradley stole second and a walk to Brett Hash loaded the bases. A walk to Demetrius Jennings gave the Terriers a 9-8 lead and an infield single by Carson Waln made it 10-8. With the bases still loaded, a double to right field by Kody Ruedisili plated two more runs for a 12-8 advantage. A single by Derek Hirsch pushed across another two runs and the Terriers took a 14-8 lead into the ninth inning.
 
In the top of the ninth with one out a batter reached first on a walk. A fielder's choice advanced the runner to second, but a fly ball to left field was the third out to end the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Austin Higginbotham worked 3.1 innings with four runs allowed on four hits with one strikeout. Elliot Lance was on the mound for 1.2 innings and gave up two runs on three hits. Jordan Accetta added two innings with two runs allowed on two hits, along with a strikeout. Spencer Kulman (1-0) earned the win by going the final two innings without allowing a run on one hit and a pair of strikeouts.
 
Trevor Houck started for Lafayette and went 3.2 innings and gave up eight runs on eight hits, along with four strikeouts. Rob Ewald threw 2.1 innings and did not allow a run on one hit. Connor McMahon (0-2) went the last two innings and gave up six runs on four hits and four walks, along with three strikeouts.  
 
Wofford will start the first Southern Conference series of the season at Mercer on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. The teams will also play at 6:00 p.m. on Friday night and then conclude the series at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
