Baseball Wins 9-2 At Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – On Wednesday night, the Wofford College baseball team picked up a 9-2 win over Winthrop at Winthrop Ballpark. Brett Hash was 3-of-4 from the plate with a home run, triple and double, and also turned an unassisted double play to lead the Terriers.
 
Wofford is 18-17 overall and Winthrop is 16-17 on the season. The two teams will also play next Tuesday at Wofford as part of the home-and-home series. The Terriers had 13 hits in the game, with ten different players with a hit. Elliot Lance gave up one run in six inning for the win on the mound. The Eagles were led by Jace Whitley with two hits and two runs scored.
 
After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the first inning, Winthrop left one runner on base to end the first. Brett Hash led off the second with a triple off the wall in center field and Carson Waln was hit by a pitch. Waln was caught stealing and the Terriers were unable to bring Hash home. The Eagles were retired in order to end the second inning.
 
Kody Ruedisili opened the third inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a passed ball. Following a walk to Demetrius Jennings, a bunt by Alec Paradowski scored Ruedisili for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the third, the Eagles were retired in order on a pair of strikeouts and a fly ball.
 
Brett Hash hit a solo home run over the fence in left field to begin the fourth inning as Wofford took a 2-0 lead. The Terriers left one runner on base as the game went to the middle of the fourth. Winthrop opened the bottom of the fourth with a bunt single, hit by pitch and walk to load the bases. With one out, a sacrifice fly made it a 2-1 game before a ground out ended the fourth inning.
 
In the top of the fifth, Demetrius Jennings led off with a double and Alec Paradowski had a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt by Derek Hirsch scored Jennings for a 3-1 lead. Wofford had runners on the corners with one out when an RBI ground out by Brett Hash gave Wofford a 4-1 advantage. Winthrop left one runner on base to end the fifth inning.
 
Carson Waln opened the sixth inning with a single through the left side and Dylan May followed with a double to right center. Max McDougald added an RBI single and a sacrifice bunt by Demetrius Jennings plated a run for a 6-1 lead. The Eagles added a single in the bottom of the sixth, but failed to advance the runner. Derek Hirsch had an infield single to begin the seventh inning. With one out, a double off the wall in left field by Brett Hash drove in Hirsch. A two-out double down the left field line by Alex Malsch scored Hash for an 8-1 score at the seventh inning stretch.
 
The Eagles lead off the bottom of the seventh with a single, but one runner was left on base to end the inning. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the eighth and Winthrop had back-to-back singles to open the bottom half of the eighth. An infield single scored a run, but an unassisted double play by Brett Hash ended the inning. In the top of the ninth, Derek Hirsch opened with a bunt single and McClain Bradley followed with a single. With runners on the corners, a double steal attempt plated a run for a 9-2 lead before the trailing runner was out at second. Winthrop had a single with two outs, but a ground out ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Elliot Lance (4-0) threw six innings with one run allowed on three hits, plus four strikeouts. Jordan Accetta went two innings and gave up one run on four hits with one strikeout. Will Stillman threw the ninth and struck out two with one hit allowed.
 
Riley Arnone (2-2) started for Winthrop and went five innings with six runs allowed on eight hits, along with four strikeouts. Reece Green worked a pair of innings with two runs allowed on three hits. Nate Pawelczyk went the final two innings with one run allowed on two hits and three strikeouts.
 
Wofford returns home to face The Citadel on Friday, April 15 at 6:00 p.m. to open a weekend Southern Conference series.
