Baseball Wins 10-5 Over The Citadel

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Friday night, the Wofford College baseball team earned a 10-5 win over The Citadel at Russell C. King Field. The Bulldogs held a 3-2 lead at the seventh inning stretch, but the Terriers responded with six runs in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-3 advantage. Wofford added a pair of runs in the eighth and The Citadel had two runs in the ninth for the final 10-5 margin.
 
Wofford is 19-17 overall and 3-7 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 13-21 overall and 3-4 in league play. The Terriers had ten hits in the contest, including two each by McClain Bradley and Max McDougald. Derek Hirsch, Carson Waln and Kody Ruedisili each had two RBIs. The Bulldogs were led by Clay Martin with two hits.
 
In the top of the first inning, the Bulldogs had two singles and stranded two runners. The Terriers were retired in order to end the first. The Citadel began the second inning with a bunt single and a walk. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners and a ground out by Jacob Watcher scored the first run of the game. Wofford went down in order to end the second inning.
 
The Bulldogs were retired in order in the top of the third inning. Wofford loaded the bases in the bottom of the third on a pair of singles and a walk. With one out, a ground ball by Derek Hirsch tied the game at 1-1. A strikeout ended the third inning with two Terriers stranded. The Citadel added a single with two outs in the top of the fourth, but the runner was left on base. Wofford stranded two runners in the bottom of the fourth after a pair of walks.
 
With one out in the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs had a single and a double. A wild pitch on a strikeout allowed a run to score to give The Citadel a 2-1 lead. Derek Hirsch reached base in the bottom of the fifth on a fielding error. A double to the wall in right center by McClain Bradley scored Hirsch for a 2-2 score.
 
A solo home run by Ben Penden led off the Bulldog half of the sixth inning for a 3-2 lead. The Citadel left one runner on base in the middle of the sixth. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Dylan May singled. Alex Malsch came in to pinch run, but was left on third base at the end of the inning.
 
In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs opened with a walk. The runners moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch. With two outs, a walk gave the Bulldogs runners on the corners but a fly ball ended the scoring chance. Demetrius Jennings walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh and Alec Paradowski followed with a single. A single by Derek Hirsch scored Jennings to tie the game at 3-3. An RBI single to right field by Brett Hash gave Wofford a 4-3 lead. A sacrifice bunt from Carson Waln and a pinch hit double by Ty Reginelli each drove in runs for a 6-3 advantage. With two outs and runners at first and second, a double to the wall in left center by Kody Ruedisili pushed the score to 8-3. Wofford left the bases loaded to end the seventh.
 
The Citadel was retired in order in the top of the eighth inning. McClain Bradley led off the bottom of the eighth with a double and then Brett Hash was hit by a pitch. After a double steal, a ground out by Carson Waln plated a run. With two outs, Max McDougald added an RBI single for a 10-3 lead at the end of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, the Bulldogs added a run on a sacrifice fly and another on a single for a 10-5 score. With the bases loaded and one out, a strikeout and fly ball to right field ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Matt Milburn went 6.2 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits. He struck out eight batters and walked four. Milburn now has 267 career strikeouts, moving him to third all-time at Wofford as he passed Luke Leftwich (261, 2013-15). Jordan Accetta (1-0) threw 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit. David Ehmen gave up two runs on two hits in a third of an inning. Spencer Kulman went the final two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout.
 
J.P. Sears started for The Citadel and went six innings with two runs allowed on four hits, along with four strikeouts. Zach Lavery (2-1) went two-thirds of an inning and gave up six runs on five hits. Kyle Smith walked the two batters he faced. Beau Strickland went the final 1.1 innings with two runs allowed on two hits and three strikeouts.
 
Wofford and The Citadel continue the series on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
