SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team rallied late for a 10-8 win over The Citadel on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field to sweep the weekend series. The Terriers were down 6-2 at the seventh inning stretch, but scored three runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth to secure the victory.
Wofford is 21-17 overall and 5-7 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 13-23 overall and 3-6 in league play. The Terriers earned a series win against the Bulldogs for the third straight season and it marked the first series sweep of the Bulldogs by Wofford since joining the Southern Conference. Wofford had 13 hits in the contest, with two each from
McClain Bradley,
Brett Hash,
Carson Waln,
Max McDougald and
Demetrius Jennings. Six of the 13 hits went for extra bases. The Bulldogs were led by Barrett Charpia with three hits, including two home runs, and three RBIs.
The Citadel had a single with one out in the first inning, but a double play ended the top half of the inning.
Alec Paradowski led off the Wofford half of the first with a walk but was stranded at second base. Both teams left one runner on base in the second inning after singles.
In the top of the third with two outs, the Bulldogs had runners on the corners after a pair of singles. A ground ball ended the scoring chance for The Citadel. Wofford was retired in order to end the third inning and the Bulldogs went in order in the top of the fourth. The Terriers left one on base in the bottom of the fourth after
Brett Hash reached on an error, while the Bulldogs stranded a pair in the top of the fifth inning.
Max McDougald led off the bottom of the fifth with a single. With one out,
Demetrius Jennings doubled to left field. A wild pitch scored McDougald from third base and a sacrifice fly by
Alec Paradowski gave Wofford a 2-0 lead. The Terriers left two on base at the end of the fifth. The Bulldogs added a single in the top of the sixth and with two outs back-to-back walks loaded the bases. A fielder's choice ended the scoring chance for The Citadel.
The Bulldogs turned a double play with one out in the bottom of the sixth to end the inning. In the top of the seventh, Barrett Charpia hit a solo home run to make it a 2-1 game. After a walk and a stolen base, an RBI single by Shy Phillips tied the game at 2-2. Another single was followed by a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. A single by Ben Peden plated another run for a 3-2 lead. With the bases loaded, Bret Hines singled to push the lead to 4-2 and a walk made it 5-2. Barrett Charpia added a sacrifice fly for a 6-2 lead. The bases were loaded again when a ground ball ended the inning.
Kody Ruedisili opened the bottom of the seventh with a triple to left center. A triple by
Demetrius Jennings in the right field corner scored Ruedisili for a 6-3 score. An infield single from
Alec Paradowski scored Jennings to make it a 6-4 game.
McClain Bradley walked with one out and
Brett Hash singled to center to load the bases. A fielder's choice by
Carson Waln plated a run and a fly ball ended the seventh with the Bulldogs holding a 6-5 lead.
With one out in the top of the eighth, The Citadel had back-to-back singles through the left side. A walk loaded the bases, but a double play ended the scoring chance for the Bulldogs.
Max McDougald led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to left field.
Alex Malsch came in to pinch run and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Alec Paradowski and
Derek Hirsch were hit by pitch to load the bases with two outs. On a full count,
McClain Bradley singled to right field and moved to second on the throw as two runs crossed the plate for a 7-6 lead. A double by
Brett Hash to the corner in right field scored two more runs for a 9-6 advantage and a double by
Carson Waln made it 10-6 before a strikeout ended the inning.
The Citadel led off the ninth with a walk and Barrett Charpia followed with his second home run of the day to make it a 10-8 score. A ground out, strikeout and fly ball ended the game.
Wofford starting pitcher
Jacob Condra-Bogan tied a career-high with six innings on the mound and did not allow a run on six hits. He had four strikeouts and issued three walks.
Grant Byers gave up two runs on two hits.
Cole Bradley went a third of an inning with three runs allowed on two hits.
Chris Sheehan gave up one hit in a third of an inning.
Quintin Pile went two-thirds of an inning with two hits allowed.
Jordan Accetta (2-0) worked two-thirds of an inning and did not allow a hit.
Will Stillman threw the final inning with two runs allowed on one hit and a strikeout.
Jacob Watcher started for The Citadel and went six innings with four runs allowed on seven hits. Ryan Stamler threw an inning with one run allowed on two hits. Zach Lavery (2-2) went two-thirds of an inning with four runs allowed on two hits. Jordan Buster allowed one run on two hits, while Dylan Spence threw two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout.
The Terriers will host Winthrop on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. before heading to VMI for a weekend series beginning Friday night at 6:00 p.m. in Lexington.
