Baseball Wins 10-7 At VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team earned a 10-7 win over VMI at Gray-Minor Stadium. The Keydets had the lead until the Terriers gained the advantage with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Wofford's 8-5 lead at the seventh inning stretch was cut to one run after VMI scored once in the seventh and once in the eighth. Wofford added two runs in the top of the ninth for the win.
 
Wofford is 23-18 overall and 7-7 in the Southern Conference. VMI is 18-25 overall and 2-12 in league play. The Terriers were led by Brett Hash with four hits, two of which were home runs, and seven RBIs. Alec Paradowski and Kody Ruedisili added three hits each. The Keydets had three hits each from David Geary and Nathan Eaton as they had a 15 to 14 advantage in hits.
 
The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the first inning. With two outs in the bottom of the first, the Keydets had runners in scoring position after a walk and double. A single by Matt Pita drove in both runners for a 2-0 lead. Another single and a walk loaded the bases before a ground out ended the first inning.  In the top of the second inning, Dylan May singled but was out at second trying to stretch it to a double. VMI had back-to-back singles with two outs in the bottom of the second, but both were left on base.
 
In the top of the third inning, Kody Ruedisili had a double down the left line with one out. A double to the wall in left center by Alec Paradowski with two outs cut the lead to 2-1 in the middle of the third. The Keydets added a single in the bottom half of the third.
 
Brett Hash hit a solo home run to left center with one out in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. It was his sixth home run of the season. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Will Malbon struck out and reached first on a wild pitch. Back-to-back doubles added two runs as the Keydets took a 4-2 lead.
 
Kody Ruedisili had a double to right center with one out in the top of the fifth inning. Demetrius Jennings as hit by a pitch and had to leave the game. Chandler Engel entered to pinch run and on a double steal Rudesili was out at third for the second out. A double off the wall in right field by Alec Paradowski scored Engel for a 4-3 game. A single by Derek Hirsch allowed Paradowski to tie the game at four. McClain Bradley added a single and while Hirsch moved to third, Bradley took second on the throw. A single by Brett Hash to right field drove in both runners as Wofford took a 6-4 lead.
 
The Keydets led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and with one out a sacrifice fly made it 6-5. In the top of the sixth, Kody Ruedisili singled with two outs but was unable to advance. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, a double and single gave the Keydets runners on the corners. Both runners were left in scoring position to end the sixth inning. Alec Paradowski led off the seventh with a single and moved to second on a ground out. With two outs, Brett Hash smashed his second home run of the game to left center to give the Terriers an 8-5 advantage at the seventh inning stretch.
 
VMI had a runner at first after a walk with two outs when an RBI double by Tyler Tharp made it an 8-6 score. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the eighth inning. After a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the eighth, David Geary hit a solo home run to cut the lead to 8-7. A strikeout ended the eighth inning for VMI. Wofford had a pair of runners on base after walks in the top of the ninth when Brett Hash hit a ball down the left line that scored both for a 10-7 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Keydets had back-to-back singles. The tying run came to the plate, but a strikeout ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Adam Scott worked four innings with four runs allowed on eight hits, along with five strikeouts. Elliot Lance (5-0) threw 2.2 innings with four hits and two runs allowed. Jordan Accetta went 1.1 innings with one run allowed on one hit, plus four strikeouts. Will Stillman earned his ninth save of the season by going the final inning with three strikeouts and two hits allowed.  
 
Josh Winder (3-4) started for VMI and went five innings, giving up six runs on ten hits with four strikeouts. Micah Gorman added 2.2 innings with two runs allowed on three hits. Blaine Lafin recorded one out and Kyle Staats gave up two runs on two walks in a third of an inning. Taylor Edens went the final two-thirds with a hit and strikeout.
 
The Terriers will conclude the series against VMI on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Wofford and Charleston Southern will play a neutral site game on Tuesday in Lexington, S.C. at 6:00 p.m.
