Baseball Sweeps VMI With 12-4 Win

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Wofford College baseball team took an early lead on the way to a 12-4 win over VMI on Sunday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium. The Terriers scored four runs in the first inning and added four on a grand slam by Kody Ruedisili in the third inning on the way to the series sweep.
 
Wofford is 24-18 overall and 8-7 in the Southern Conference to move into fourth place. VMI is 18-26 overall and 2-13 in league play. The Terriers earned a road sweep for the first time since the 2005 season (at Georgia Southern) and have back-to-back conference sweeps (The Citadel and VMI) for the first time. The Terriers were led by McClain Bradley with three hits, while Kody Ruedisili had two hits and four RBIs. The Keydets had eleven hits in the game, led by Matt Dunlevy with three.
 
Alec Paradowski opened the game with a single and Derek Hirsch followed by reaching on a bunt single. A triple by McClain Bradley scored both runs for a 2-0 lead. A ground out with one out by Dylan May scored Bradley to give Wofford a 3-0 advantage. A single by Cody Miller was followed by an RBI double off the wall by Max McDougald for a 4-0 score in the middle of the first inning. The Keydets got one run back in the bottom of the first to make it 4-1 after the opening inning.
 
With two runners on base in the top of the second, a fielder's choice gave Wofford runners on the corners with one out. A wild pitch scored Kody Ruedisili from third base for a 5-1 lead. The Terriers left one runner on base to end the top of the second. VMI led off the bottom of the second with a single and the runner was on third after a stolen base and ground ball. A wild pitch allowed a run to score for a 5-2 game at the end of the second.
 
Dylan May was hit by a pitch and Cody Miller singled to begin the third inning and Chandler Engel was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A grand slam by Kody Ruedisili off the scoreboard in left center gave the Terriers a 9-2 lead. It was his first home run of the season and sixth of his career. In the bottom of the third, the Keydets had two runners on after an error and an infield single. A double was hit to left field, but the lead runner was out at home on the play. A strikeout ended the third inning.
 
Wofford had two runners on base in the top of the fourth after a walk and single by Dylan May. The bases were loaded with two outs after a fielding error, but a ground out ended the scoring chance. VMI led off the bottom of the fourth with a pair of singles. A double play was followed by a wild pitch that allowed a run to score for a 9-3 game. The Keydets added a double and a single to put runners on the corners, but a fly ball ended the inning.
 
After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fifth, VMI had runners in scoring position following a hit by pitch and a double. A ground out scored a run to make it 9-4 before a ground out sent the game to the sixth inning. The Terriers went down in order in the top of the sixth inning and the Keydets stranded one to end the inning.
 
To lead off the seventh inning, Max McDougald walked. With one out, Kody Ruedisili singled and Alec Paradowskii reached on an error to load the bases. A pop up and a ground out left three runners on base for the Terriers. In the bottom of the seventh, the Keydets had a hit before a double play ended the inning.
 
The Terriers had two outs in the top of the eighth when Cody Miller reached on an error and Max McDougald singled. A double to right center by Alex Malsch drove in both runners for an 11-4 lead. The Keydets were retired in order to end the eighth inning. McClain Bradley added a double with two outs in the top of the ninth and he scored on a double by Brett Hash for a 12-4 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, a walk was followed by a pair of strikeouts. A ground ball ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan (4-3) tied a career-high with six inning on the mound. He gave up four runs on ten hits and had six strikeouts. Spencer Kulman earned his first career save by going the final three innings with one hit allowed and five strikeouts.
 
Brandon Barbery (3-6) started for VMI and went two innings with five runs allowed on six hits, along with two strikeouts. Jared Silva gave up four run on two hits in an inning. Ryan Bennett worked three innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Jack Gomersall threw two innings with two runs allowed on three hits and a strikeout. Taylor Edens gave up one run on two hits in the ninth inning with one strikeout.
 
Wofford and Charleston Southern will play a neutral site game on Tuesday in Lexington, S.C. at 6:00 p.m. The Terriers begin a weekend series against Dayton on Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
