Lance Complete Game Shutout of CSU

LEXINGTON, S.C. – Junior Elliot Lance threw a complete game shutout as the Wofford College baseball team won 4-0 over Charleston Southern at Lexington County Baseball Stadium on Tuesday night. Lance, a native of Lexington, allowed just four hits in the contest. The Terrier offense had 12 hits in the game.
 
Wofford is 25-18 overall and Charleston Southern is 15-27 overall. The Terriers were led by McClain Bradley and Demetrius Jennings with three hits each, while Kody Ruedisili had a solo home run. The Bucs had two hits from Kevin Hickey to lead the team.
 
Max McDougald led off with a walk and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. A walk to Alec Paradowski and a single by McClain Bradley loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly by Dylan May gave Wofford a 1-0 lead. The Bucs were retired in order to end the first inning. Alex Malsch led off the second inning with a double and stole third. An RBI single from Demetrius Jennings made it a 2-0 lead. Charleston Southern went down in order to end the second inning.
 
In the top of the third inning, McClain Bradley added a single but was left on base. The Bucs left one on base to end the third inning after an error and Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fourth inning. The Bucs had their first hit in the bottom of the fourth, but the runner was stranded.
 
Derek Hirsch had a single with one out in the top of the fifth inning and he stole second base before a strikeout ended the Wofford half. Charleston Southern led off the bottom of the fifth with a single. A fly ball and a pair of fielder's choices ended the fifth. Mack Nathanson had an infield single for Wofford with one out in the top of the sixth inning. He stole second, but was unable to advance further.

Demetrius Jennings singled to lead off the seventh inning and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, After Jennings stole third base, a single by Derek Hirsch drove him in for a 3-0 lead. Alec Paradowski and McClain Bradley added singles to load the bases with one out. A double play ended the scoring chance for the Terriers. The Bucs led off their half of the seventh with a single, but a fly ball and double play sent the game to the eighth.
 
With two outs in the top of the eighth, Kody Ruedisili hit a home run over the short fence in left field. It was his second home run of the season. Demetrius Jennings added a single, but was out on a fielder's choice. Charleston Southern had a single up the middle with one out in the bottom of the eighth and added a walk. A spectacular diving catch by Kody Ruedisili in right center field ended the eighth inning.
 
After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the ninth inning, the Bucs first two outs in the bottom of the ninth were fly balls and a fly ball to right field ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Elliot Lance threw nine innings with four hits allowed. He struck out one batter and allowed only one walk for the complete game shutout. It was the first shutout of the season for the Terriers. Lance is the first pitcher to throw a complete game shutout since Adam Scott accomplished the feat in the SoCon Tournament against Furman (5/22/15).
 
Eddie Hiott started for Charleston Southern and went two innings with two runs allowed on three hits, plus two strikeouts. Cody Smith threw an inning with one hit allowed and a strikeout. Daniel Johnson went an inning with two strikeouts, while Jon Piriz went an inning with one hit and two strikeouts. Cody Maw worked 1.1 innings with one run allowed on four hits, along with two strikeouts. Will Hartsell added 1.2 innings with one run allowed on three hits and a strikeout. Chase Hubbard threw the ninth with two strikeouts.
 
The Terriers begin a non-conference weekend series against Dayton on Friday night at 6:00 p.m., with additional games on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
