Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Dayton

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Friday, the Wofford College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Dayton at Russell C. King Field. The Flyers scored four runs in the first three innings of the first game and a late rally by the Terries came up short in a 6-4 decision. Dayton scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to break open a tie game and win game two by a 9-5 score.
 
Wofford is 25-20 overall and Dayton is 16-28 on the season. The Terriers were led by Derek Hirsch with three hits in the first game, while Dylan May added three hits, including a home run, in the second game.
 
In the first game, Dayton had a double with one out followed by an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Another single gave the Flyers runners on the corners. An attempted double steal resulted in the runner from third scoring and the runner at first out on the play to make it 2-0. Wofford left a pair of runners on base to end the first frame.
 
Two doubles in the top of the second gave Dayton a 3-0 lead and Wofford had a single from Max McDougald in the bottom of the second. The Flyers led off the third inning with a triple and with one out a ground out made it  4-0. Alec Paradowski was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Derek Hirsch followed with a single to give Wofford runners on the corners and a walk by McClain Bradley loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by Brett Hash plated a run and Dylan May was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. A strikeout and ground out ended the third inning with three runners stranded and Wofford trailing 4-1.
 
Both teams had singles in the fourth inning. Dayton was retired in order in the top of the fifth and Wofford left one on base to end the fifth. The Flyers added a run on a two-out single in the top of the sixth for a 5-1 lead. Max McDougald led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and Alec Paradowski walked with two outs. A bunt single by Derek Hirsch loaded the bases, but a line out to first ended the sixth with three runners stranded. In the seventh inning, both teams were retired in order.
 
Max McDougald led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk and with one out Demetrius Jennings singled. A two-out single by Derek Hirsch scored McDougald for a 5-2 game. An RBI single through the left side by McClain Bradley added a run for a 5-3 score, but Wofford left two runners in scoring position to end the inning. In the top of the ninth, a lead-off double was followed by a sacrifice bunt. A fielder's choice plated a run to make it 6-3. Dylan May doubled to begin the Wofford half of the ninth. Carson Waln pinch ran and moved to third on a ground out. A ground out scored Waln for a 6-4 score
 
Wofford starting pitcher Matthew Milburn (5-4) threw six innings with five runs allowed on nine hits. He had five strikeouts, giving him 281 strikeouts for his career. He has surpassed Tom McIntyre (1954-56) to become the all-time strikeout leader in school history. David Ehmen retired six straight batters over two innings with a pair of strikeouts. Jordan Accetta threw the ninth with one run allowed on two hits and one strikeout.
 
Charlie Dant (3-4) started for Dayton and went 5.2 innings with one run allowed on four hits, along with three strikeouts. Sam Brunner threw 2.1 innings with two runs allowed on four hits. Kevin Piersol earned the save by allowing one run on one hit in the bottom of the ninth.
 
In game two, the Flyers led off with a walk and with two outs a double made it a 1-0 game. Wofford was retired in order to end the first inning. Both teams were retired in order in the second inning. Dayton led off the third inning with a solo home run by Maverick Prine for a 2-0 advantage. With one out in the bottom of the third, Kody Ruedisili hit a triple to the corner in right field. Back-to-back walks by Demetrius Jennings and Alec Paradowski loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by Derek Hirsch cut the lead to 2-1, but Demetrius Jennings was out at home in an attempted double steal to end the third inning.
 
Dayton led off the fourth with a walk and the runner took second on a sacrifice bunt. A single gave the Flyers runners on the corners and a double steal attempt scored a run, with an out at second base for a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Brett Hash singled with one out and then Dylan May hit a ball off the left field foul pole for a 3-3 game.  It was his first home run of the season and third of his career. In the top of the fifth, the Flyers had two singles, but a double play ended the half inning. Wofford was retired in order to end the fifth inning.
 
The Flyers led off the sixth with a single, but the runner was stranded at third. Derek Hirsch opened the Wofford half of the sixth with a single, however the Flyers turned a double play. With two outs, Brett Hash crushed a ball to left center for his 8th home run of the season to give Wofford a 4-3 lead. The Terriers added two more singles, but both runners were left in scoring position to end the inning.
 
With one out in the top of the seventh, Dayton had a runner on third after a single and a fielding error on the play. With two outs, a single up the middle drove in a run to tie the game at 4-4. Wofford had two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Alec Paradowski walked and Derek Hirsch reached on an error. A strikeout ended the seventh inning.
 
In the top of the eighth, the lead-off batter reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A walk and single loaded the bases. After a strikeout, a single drove in a run and two bases loaded walks made it 7-4. A single up the middle drove in two more runs for a 9-4 lead before a strikeout ended the top half. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth after a single by Dylan May and Dayton stranded one in the top of the ninth.
 
Wofford opened the bottom of the ninth with a single by Kody Ruedisili and Demetrius Jennings walked. Ruedisili moved to third on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Derek Hirsch for a 9-5 score. A strikeout ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Adam Scott threw six innings with three runs allowed on six hits, plus five strikeouts. Spencer Kulman struck out three batters in an inning, but gave up one run on two hits. Will Stillman (3-2) went two-thirds of an inning with five unearned runs allowed on two hits, three walks, and a strikeout. Jordan Accetta recorded one out with a hit and strikeout. Chris Sheehan worked the ninth with one hit allowed and a strikeout.
 
Zach Beaver started for Dayton and went six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, along with five strikeouts. Austin Cline (2-3) threw two innings and did not allow a run on one hit with three strikeouts. Ben Polansky went the ninth with one run on a hit and a strikeout.
 
The Terriers and Flyers will close out the three-game series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Wofford will visit UNC Asheville on Wednesday before returning for a home Southern Conference series against UNCG beginning next Friday.
