Baseball Wins 10-5 Over Dayton

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team defeated Dayton 10-5 on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field to complete a weekend series. The Flyers had an early 3-0 lead, but the Terriers scored the next ten runs in the contest to secure the victory.
 
Wofford is 26-20 overall and Dayton is 16-29 on the season. The Terriers had twelve hits in the game, with two each from Alec Paradowski, Derek Hirsch, Chandler Engel, and Kody Ruedisili. Max McDougald had two RBIs. The Flyers were led by Nick Ryan with three hits and Sam Sustersic with a pair of RBIs.  
 
The Flyers opened the game with a single by Nick Ryan on the first pitch. He stole second and moved to third on a ground out. A double scored the first run of the game and an RBI single made it 2-0 in the middle of the first inning. Derek Hirsch singled for Wofford in the first, but a double play ended the inning.
 
In the top of the second inning, Dayton had runners on the corners after a hit by pitch and single. A sacrifice fly gave the Flyers a 3-0 lead. Wofford was retired in order to end the second inning and Dayton did not threaten in the top of the third.
 
Kody Ruedisili doubled with one out in the bottom of the third inning and moved to third on a wild pitch. A single by Demetrius Jennings scored Ruedisili and Alec Paradowski reached on a fielder's choice, with Jennings moving to third on an error during the play. A sacrifice bunt by Derek Hirsch scored Jennings for a 3-2 score. The Flyers left a runner on second base to end the top of the fourth inning. Dylan May led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and with two outs he scored on a double by Chandler Engel. Engel moved to third on a throwing error on the play and then scored on a bunt single from Kody Ruedisili to take a 4-3 lead.
 
Dayton left one runner on base in the top of the fifth inning. Wofford led off the bottom of the fifth inning with back-to-back doubles from Derek Hirsch and Brett Hash to take a 5-3 lead. Dylan May walked to give the Terriers runners on the corners and a bunt single by Max McDougald scored Hash to make it a 6-3 game.
 
After Dayton was retired in order in the top of the sixth, Alec Paradowski singled with one out. He moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch. Derek Hirsch walked and Brett Hash reached on an error. A double by Dylan May scored Hirsch, while Hash scored on a ground out for a 9-3 lead. The Flyers were retired in order in the top of the seventh. Chandler Engel led off the Wofford half of the seventh with an infield single and Alex Malsch entered as a pinch runner. With two outs, a double off the wall in right field by Alec Paradowski scored Malsch for a 10-3 advantage.
 
In the top of the eighth inning, Dayton led off with a single and added a single with one out. Back-to-back strikeouts ended the top half. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth inning.  After a lead-off walk, the Flyers were down to their final out when Sam Sustersic hit a home run to right center. A fly ball ended the game with a final score of 10-5.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan (5-3) worked five innings with three runs allowed on five hits, along with four strikeouts. Elliot Lance went three innings and did not allow a run on two hits with three strikeouts. Spencer Kulman gave up two runs on one hit in the ninth with a strikeout.
 
Tyler Henry (4-1) started for Dayton and went four innings with four runs allowed on five hits, plus one strikeout. Masashi Sakamoto gave up two runs on three hits. Jason Johnson threw two innings with three runs allowed on two hits and three strikeouts. Ben Polansky went an inning with one run on two hits and Kevin Piersol retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the eighth.
 
The Terriers will visit UNC Asheville on Wednesday before returning for a home Southern Conference series against UNCG beginning next Friday.
