Baseball Defeated 10-8 At UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – On Wednesday night, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 10-8 by UNC Asheville at Greenwood Field in the final non-conference game of the season. The Bulldogs broke open a one-run game by scoring six runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wofford rallied with five runs in the final two innings, but left the bases loaded to end the game.  
 
Wofford is 26-21 overall and UNC Asheville is 15-27 on the season. The Terriers and Bulldogs split the series this season, which each team winning at home. Wofford had ten hits in the game, including three by Brett Hash and two by McClain Bradley. Danny Wilson led the Bulldogs with two hits and three RBIs.
 
Alec Paradowski opened the game with a walk and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A double to left center by Brett Hash scored Paradowski for a 1-0 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the first inning and with one runner on base, Joe Tietjen hit a home run for a 2-1 lead. Cody Miller doubled to begin the second inning, but failed to advance. The Bulldogs had a double and a single in the bottom of the second for runners on the corners with one out. A sacrifice fly made it a 3-1 game before a strikeout ended the inning.
 
The Terriers had two runners on base in the top of the third inning after a walk to Brett Hash and a single by Dylan May. With two outs, a single by McClain Bradley drove in one run but May was out at home on the play to end the top of the inning at 3-2. The Bulldogs had one out in the bottom of the third with two runners on base when an RBI single made it a 4-2 game.
 
Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fourth inning and UNCA led off the bottom half of the fourth with an infield single. A double play was followed by a single and a walk before a strikeout ended the fourth frame. Derek Hirsch walked with one out in the top of the fifth inning, but was stranded at second. The Bulldogs went down in order to end the fifth inning. With one out in the top of the sixth, McClain Bradley got one run back on a solo home run to left field. It was his first career home run and made it a 4-3 game in the middle of the sixth.
 
The Bulldogs opened the bottom of the sixth with a single. With one out, three straight singles added a pair of runs for a 6-3 lead. The bases were loaded after a walk and a single by Kyle Carruthers plated two more runs to make it 8-3. With two outs, a double down the left line pushed across two more runs for a 10-3 advantage. A line out ended the sixth inning. Derek Hirsch singled with two outs in the top of the seventh and Brett Hash added a single. Dylan May walked to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the scoring chance. The Bulldogs stranded two runners to end the seventh inning.  
 
With two outs in the top of the eighth, Alex Malsch singled and Demetrius Jennings walked. A single by Alec Paradowski drove in Malsch for a 10-4 score. Derek Hirsch reached on an error that scored Jennings and Brett Hash added an RBI single for a 10-6 contest. After the Bulldogs were retired in order in the bottom of the eighth inning, Wofford loaded the bases with a pair of walks and an error. The runners advanced on a wild pitch to score a run and a sacrifice fly by Demetrius Jennings cut the lead to 10-8. The bases were loaded again after a walk to Alec Paradowski, but a fly ball and ground out ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Elliot Lance (6-1) worked three innings and gave up four runs on five hits, plus five strikeouts. Adam Scott struck out two and allowed two hits in two innings. Jordan Accetta gave up six runs on six hits in two thirds of an inning. Spencer Kulman faced one batter and recorded one out. Josh Simpson did not allow a hit and had one strikeout in an inning. Will Stillman struck out two of the three batters he faced in the eighth.
 
Spencer Orr (3-3) started for UNC Asheville and went two innings with one run allowed on two hits, along with a pair of strikeouts. Zach Greene threw an inning with one run given up on two hits. Corey Randall did not allow a hit in two innings and recorded two strikeouts. Adam Spracklin gave up one run on one hit in an inning. Eric Whitecavage worked an inning with two hits allowed and a strikeout. Nick Boyles added an inning with three runs allowed on three hits, Jesse Juday, Lucas Clarke and Brett Hires combined the throw the ninth inning with two runs allowed on four walks.
 
The Terriers return home for a Southern Conference series against league-leader UNCG beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m.
