SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 12-3 by Western Carolina at Russell C. King Field on Sunday afternoon. The Catamounts had a 6-1 lead at the end of two innings and outhit the Terriers 18 to 8 in the contest to earn the road series sweep.
Wofford is 16-13 overall and 1-5 in the Southern Conference. Western Carolina is 14-13 overall and 5-1 in league play. The Terriers were led by
McClain Bradley and
Kody Ruedisili with two hits each. Nobu Suzuki led the Catamounts with three hits and four RBIs. It was the first time Wofford has been swept in a home Southern Conference series since 2012 (Appalachian State).
With two outs in the top of the first inning, a double was followed by a Matt Smith home run to right field for a 2-0 lead. The Terriers had two outs in the bottom of the first when back-to-back doubles from
McClain Bradley and
Carson Waln made it a 2-1 game. Wofford left two runners on base at the end of the first inning.
The Catamounts began the second inning with back-to-back singles up the middle. A walk with one out loaded the bases and back-to-back singles drove in three runs for a 5-1 lead. With two out, a single plated another run for a 6-1 score in the middle of the second. Wofford was retired in order to end the second inning and Western Carolina left a pair on base in the top of the third inning.
After Wofford stranded one runner in the bottom of the third inning, the Catamounts opened the fourth with a bunt single. Three straight outs ended the top half with one runner stranded. With one out in the bottom of the fourth,
Reed Massey walked and a hit-and-run by
Max McDougald gave Wofford runners on the corners. A bunt single by
Kody Ruedisili scored Massey for a 6-2 game. After a double steal moved both runners into scoring position, a walk loaded the bases with two outs. A ground out ended the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning with one out, Caleb Robinson singled but advanced to third on a fielding error. An RBI double by Spencer Holcomb and a single by Garrett Brown made it 8-2 in the middle of the fifth.
McClain Bradley led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and he moved to second on a failed pick-off attempt. Three straight strikeouts ended the fifth inning.
Western Carolina struck out twice in the top of the sixth inning and Wofford left one on base in the bottom of the sixth. Caleb Robinson added a double for the Catamounts in the top of the seventh, but was stranded at third base.
Derek Hirsch singled up the middle to begin the bottom of the seventh and
McClain Bradley walked. The seventh inning ended with both runners left in scoring position.
The Catamounts added a pair of runs on a home run by Bryson Bowman to push the lead to 10-2 in the top of the eighth.
Kody Ruedisili doubled with one out in the bottom of the eighth. After a walk by
Demetrius Jennings, a wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position but both were stranded. Western Carolina loaded the bases on a single, walk and hit by pitch. With two outs, a single by Nobu Suzuki drove in a pair of runs for a 12-2 lead. The Terriers led off the bottom of the ninth with
Chandler Engel reaching on an error and
Carson Waln walking. A double by
Mack Nathanson down the left line scored Engel, but Wofford was unable to add a run for a 12-3 final score.
Wofford starting pitcher Jacob Condra-Boga (3-2) went 4.1 innings with eight runs allowed on eleven hits, along with two strikeouts.
Elliot Lance threw 2.2 innings without allowing a run on two hits and three strikeouts.
Jordan Accetta gave up two runs on two hits in an inning.
Will Stillman worked an inning with two runs allowed on two hits, plus two strikeouts.
Tristan Baker started for Western Carolina and threw 3.2 innings with two runs allowed on four hits. He walked three batters and struck out three. Colton Davis (4-1) went 4.1 innings and did not allow a run on three hits as he struck out five. B.J. Nobles was on the mound for the ninth and gave up on run on one hit with two strikeouts.
Wofford will begin a six-game road trip when they travel to Baylor for a pair of games on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Terriers will then play at Samford for a three-game weekend series and a midweek game at Winthrop before returning home.
