PITTSBURGH, PA – The Wofford men's soccer team used two first half goals and held on late to defeat Bucknell, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in the Duquesne Invitational.
Â
With the Terriers leading,1-0, late in the second half, senior forward
Matthew Aurednik earned a penalty kick and converted the chance to give Wofford a 2-0 lead. It was Aurednik's second goal of the season and the 23
rd of his illustrious career. His 23 career goals places him first in the program's history since moving to Division I in 1995, passing Alex Hutchins (2009-12) and
Nestor Jaramillo (2012-15), who notched 22 apiece.
Â
The game started off a little shaky for the Terriers, as Bucknell earned a penalty kick in the fifth minute. However,
Garrett Closs came up with a huge save, keeping the game scoreless and swinging momentum back to Wofford's side.
Â
The Terriers capitalized on that momentum, creating numerous scoring opportunities in the first half. A beautiful set piece from
Connor Donohue led to a header from
Andreas Suri that found the back of the net in the 28
th minute. It was Suri's second goal of the season and Donohue's second assist in as many games, both of which came from set pieces that were headed in.
Â
Minutes later, Wofford struck again, as Aurednik's  34
th minute PK stretched their lead to 2-0 going into the break.
Â
The Terriers controlled possession for most of the first half, outshooting Bucknell, 10-7.
Â
In the second half, the Bison responded by scoring quickly to close the gap to 2-1 with just under 40 minutes to play.
Â
Despite attempting just one shot in the second half, compared to Bucknell's nine, the Terriers did not allow the game tying goal and clinched the 2-1 victory.
Â
The win improves Wofford to 4-2 on the season.
At the conclusion of the Duquesne Invitational, the coaches selected eleven players to form an all-tournament team. Wofford's selections were defender
Kyle Nelson and midfielder
Andreas Suri. Nelson and Suri each recorded one goal for the tournament.
Â
Up next, the Terriers will break for nine days, before playing USC Upstate at home on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in their last nonconference game of the season.
