Macon, Ga. – The Wofford women's soccer team lost 2-1 at Mercer on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers opened the scoring but Mercer fought back and scored the game winner in the 71
st minute of the second half. Wofford moves to 5-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Southern Conference.
Wofford opened the scoring in the 13
th minute thanks to the right foot of
Hayley Younginer. Mercer had multiple offensive chances but could not find the equalizer thanks to great goal keeping by
Alex Carroll. Carroll's biggest play of the first half came in the 42
nd minute when she made a leaping save on a penalty kick to deny Mercer's Logan Culver. Just over two minutes later in the 44
th minute Mercer was awarded another penalty kick and this time the Bears were able to convert and tie the game just before the half time whistle.
The second half began with both teams trading scoring opportunities but neither team could find the go-ahead goal. That all changed in the 71
st minute when Logan Culver and Hayley Moore linked up with Jasmine Spence to put the Bears in front for good.
Despite the loss Wofford totaled 16 shots and three corner kicks. In the match
Hayley Younginer picked up her 18
th goal of the season, setting a new single season record for the Terriers. The previous record was set in 1999 by Thea Moen and Wofford still has six matches remaining in the 2017 season. Younginer also puts herself in ninth place for the SoCon single season record trailing the leader Hannah Short of ETSU by 9 goals.
Wofford will return to the pitch on Friday evening when the Terriers travel to Greenville to face off against Furman at 6 pm.
