SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team fell 73-65 to Chattanooga on Saturday night, ending the Terriers four game win streak. With the loss, Wofford falls to 13-14 on the season and 8-6 in Southern Conference play, while Chattanooga improves to 18-7 overall and 9-4 in conference action, sweeping the meetings between the two teams and handing Wofford just its second home loss of the season.
Fletcher Magee led Wofford in scoring with 26 points. Magee was 10-19 from the field, 3-9 from beyond the arc and 3-4 from the free throw line in 37 minutes of play.
Ryan Sawvell recorded his fifth double-double of the season and second consecutive with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Cameron Jackson finished with nine points.
Nathan Hoover and
Matthew Pegram scored six and
Eric Garcia added two. Garcia finished with 10 assists to three turnovers.
The first half was close throughout as neither team led by more than six until two minutes remaining. With Wofford leading 27-25, the Terriers went on an 8-0 run off of four points from Magee and four from Sawvell. Chattanooga went on a 6-0 run to close the half, but Wofford held on to a 35-31 advantage at the break.
Wofford had momentum out of the half and held the Mocs at bay, leading by as many as nine points. Wofford led 58-51 with 6:24 to go, but Chattanooga used a 22-7 run to take the lead and emerge victorious.
Greg Pryor led Chattanooga with 19 points and eight rebounds, both team highs. Justin Tuoyo finished with 11 points, four rebounds and four blocks. Casey Jones and Rodney Chatman scored 10 and the SoCon preseason player of the year, Tre' McLean, finished with just seven.
Wofford shot 39.4% in the contest. Chattanooga shot 40.6% in the first half but hit 63.2% in the second half to shot 49% for the night. The Terriers led for 28:11 of the game while Chattanooga led for 9:08. The game was tied for 2:41.
After playing five games in nine days, Wofford gets a short break before facing UNCG in Greensboro Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. Wofford won the first matchup with the Spartans 93-74 on Jan. 25 at home.The Terriers then return home for senior day and the final home game inside Benjamin Johnson Arena, taking on Western Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 18. Wofford ends the regular season at VMI and at Furman before heading to the SoCon tournament, held March 3-6 in Asheville. Â
