Baseball Splits Doubleheader

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday at Russell C. King Field. Against La Salle in the opener, Spencer Kulman threw a complete game and allowed only one run in the ninth inning for the 6-1 win.  In the second game against Monmouth, the game was tied at two when the Hawks scored four runs in the top of the ninth and held on for a 6-4 win.
 
Wofford is 6-10 on the season, while La Salle is 1-14 and Monmouth is 2-10 overall. Brett Hash led the Terriers on the day with three hits and two RBIs.
 
In the first game against La Salle, the Explorers were retired in order in the top of the first inning. Wofford loaded the bases with one out after a walk and pair of singles. With two outs, a single up the middle by Max McDougald drove in two runs. A double steal attempt allowed a run to score before the third out for a 3-0 lead. Both teams had singles in the second inning.
 
After La Salle was retired in order in the top of the third, Kody Ruedisili led off with a triple to right center. A ground out by Brett Hash scored Ruedisili for a 4-0 advantage. Both teams went in order in the fourth inning and fifth innings. The Explorers went in order in the top of the sixth and with two outs in the bottom of the sixth Brett Hash doubled, but failed to advance.
 
The Explorers had one reach on an error in the top of the seventh and in the bottom half of the seventh Brett Rodriguez walked with one out. Rodriguez was picked off and Reed Massey followed with a single. Andrew Orzel and Kody Ruedisili walked to load the bases, but a fly ball ended the scoring chance.
 
In the top of the eighth, the Explorers led off with a walk and added a walk with two outs. A strikeout ended the top half for La Salle. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Mack Nathanson hit a solo home run for a 5-0 lead. It was his fifth home run of the season. Cody Miller was hit by a pitch and Max McDougald added a single. With runners on the corners, Miller scored on a wild pitch for a 6-0 advantage. A double led off the ninth for La Salle. A ground ball moved the runner to third and a sacrifice fly scored the runner. A strikeout ended the game with a 6-1 final score.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Spencer Kulman (3-1) threw his first career complete game and allowed one run on two hits with five strikeouts.
 
C.J. Pruitt (0-4) started for the Explorers and went 6.2 innings with four runs allowed on seven hits with five strikeouts. Michael Flax went the final 1.1 innings with two runs allowed on two hits.
 
The second game against Monmouth, the Hawks left two runners on base in the top of the first after an error and single. Wofford stranded a pair of runners in scoring position to end the first inning after two walks. Monmouth led off the second with a single, but was unable to advance the runner. McClain Bradley singled to start the bottom of the second inning and was out trying to steal third to end the frame.
 
With two outs in the third, the Hawks had a single and then a home run by Shaine Hughes for a 2-0 lead. The Terriers were retired in order to end the third inning and Monmouth left two runners on base in the top of the fourth inning after a single and walk. Wofford went in order in the bottom of the fourth. The Hawks left one runner on base in the top of the fifth after a hit by pitch. McClain Bradley walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth and moved to second on a ground out. A single through the right side by Reed Massey scored Bradley for a 2-1 score.
 
In the top of the sixth, one Hawk was left on base. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth Brett Hash hit his fifth home run of the season on a ball over the fence in centerfield that tied the game at 2. Two Terriers walked, but a caught stealing at third ended the sixth inning. Monmouth was retired in order in the top of the seventh.
 
After the seventh inning stretch, Reed Massey singled with two outs but was unable to advance. The Hawks had runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the eighth before a fielder's choice ended the top half. Brett Hash singled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, however a strikeout sent the game to the ninth inning.
 
A lead-off walk in the top of the ninth was followed by a Wofford error that put runners at second and third. A hit by pitch loaded the bases and a fielding error on a sacrifice fly plated a run for a 3-2 lead. With two runners on, a home run to right center by Tom Jakubowski pushed the Hawks advantage to 6-2. Two more singles had runner on the corners before the runner at first was picked off to end the top half. Wofford began the bottom of the ninth with Carson Waln reaching on an error and McClain Bradley hitting a single up the middle. A pair of strikeouts was followed by a double to left center by Andrew Orzel to cut the lead to 6-4. Kody Ruedisili singled to give Wofford runners on the corners, but a strikeout ended the game.
 
Wofford starter Austin Higginbotham threw a career long seven innings and had a career high eight strikeouts, with two runs allowed on five hits. Jordan Accetta (1-1) went 1.2 innings with four runs allowed on three hits and one strikeout. David Ehmen gave up one hit. Merritt Huber picked off a runner for an out.
 
Tyler Ksiazek started for Monmouth and gave up two runs on three hits in 5.2 innings with five strikeouts. Joe Molettiere (1-2) earned the win by going 3.1 innings with two runs allowed on five hits and six strikeouts.
 
Wofford is in the midst of a 14-game home stand. The Terriers will host USC Upstate on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. before a four-game weekend series against Yale.
