Baseball Downs USC Upstate 4-2

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team picked up a 4-2 win over USC Upstate on Thursday at Russell C. King Field. The Spartans scored first, but the Terriers took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning and held on for the victory.
                    
Wofford is 7-10 on the season, while USC Upstate is 9-10 overall. This was the second meeting between the two teams this season, with a deciding third game scheduled for May 10 at USC Upstate. The Terriers were led by Cody Miller with a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Max McDougald with a pair of hits. Zach Krider had two hits and scored a run to lead the Spartans.
 
Both teams had a runner reach base in the first inning. The lead-off batter was walked to start the top of the second for the Spartans, but was picked off. Wofford had runners on the corners with two outs after a pair of singles, but the lead runner was picked off third on an attempted double steal to end the second inning.
 
In the top of the third, the Spartans had a double and with two outs a single drove in the first run of the game. Wofford had a pair of singles in the bottom of the third, but was unable to score. The Spartans were retired in order in the top of the fourth. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Mack Nathanson walked and Cody Miller followed with a home run to center for a 2-1 lead. It was the first home run of the season for Miller and the sixth of his career. Max McDougald walked and then with two outs Andrew Orzel reached on an error and McDougald scored for a 3-1 advantage.
 
The Spartans had a double and a single with and had runners in scoring position with one out when a foul out and ground out ended the top half. Wofford left one runner on base after a single by McClain Bradley in the fifth. In the top of the sixth, the Spartans had runners on the corners with two outs when a wild pitch made it 3-2. The Terriers went in order in to end the sixth inning. To begin the seventh, the Spartans drew back-to-back walks. With one out, a fielding error loaded the bases. A fielder's choice got the lead runner out at home and a strikeout sent the game to the seventh inning stretch with three men left on base.
 
Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh and the Spartans went in order in the top of the eighth. Brett Hash led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. A single to left field by Mack Nathanson drove in Hash for a 4-2 lead. The Spartans were retired in order in the ninth to end the game.
 
Wofford starter Matt Ellmyer went 4.2 innings with one run allowed on four hits and four strikeouts. Chris Sheehan (1-0) worked 1.1 with one run allowed on one hit as he earned his first career win. Reece Maniscalco faced two batters and Merritt Huber went an inning with one strikeout. Austin Higginbotham worked a clean eighth inning. Jordan Accetta picked up his third save of the season by retiring the side in order in the ninth.
 
Blake Whitney (1-2) started for the Spartans and threw four innings with three runs allowed, along with eight strikeouts. Brian Boocock went two innings and allowed one hit with two strikeouts. Bryan Hathaway did not allow a hit in an inning on the mound. Eric Birkland gave up one run on three hits with two strikeouts in the eighth.
 
Wofford will begin a four-game series against Yale on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
