SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team split a doubleheader against Furman on Saturday at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored seven runs in the second inning on the way to a 21-2 win over the Paladins in the first game. In the second game, Wofford had a 4-3 lead after five innings, but the Paladins scored nine unanswered runs over the final three innings for a 12-4 win.

Wofford is 10-14 on the season and begin conference play 2-1, while Furman is 11-11 overall and 1-2 in the league. The Terriers won the weekend SoCon series (2-1), marking the sixth straight year the home team has claimed the series. The Terriers were led by
Max McDougald with four hits and six RBIs in the first game and
Andrew Orzel with two hits in the second game. Carter Grote had three hits for the Paladins in the first game, while Brandon Elmy was 4-of-6 with two RBIs in the second game.

In the first game, the Paladins opened with a single before a double play ended the top half of the first. With two outs in the bottom of the first,
Brett Hash singled and then
McClain Bradley cleared the fence in left field for a 2-0 lead. It was Bradley's second home run of the season. Furman was retired in order in the top of the second.
Mack Nathanson led off the bottom of the second with a single and
Max McDougald added a double.
Alex Malsch reached on an error that plated a run. Back-to-back fielder's choices with the lead runner safe loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by
Andrew Orzel added a run and a double off the wall in right field by
Brett Hash made it a 7-0 game. RBI singles from
Cody Miller and
Max McDougald gave the Terriers a 9-0 lead at the end of two innings.

Both teams left one runner on base in the third inning. The Paladins loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with two outs, but a strikeout ended the scoring opportunity. Wofford opened the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back singles from
McClain Bradley and
Cody Miller. With one out,
Max McDougald hit his first home run of the season out to left field for a 12-0 lead. Furman stranded one runner in the top of the fifth.

Wofford began the bottom of the fifth with singles from
Andrew Orzel and
Brett Hash. A single up the middle by
McClain Bradley added a run and a
Cody Miller single loaded the bases.
Mack Nathanson doubled down the left field line to score two more runs. An RBI ground out and sacrifice fly cleared the bases for a 17-0 advantage. Both teams were retired in order in the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh, Furman had a pair of singles and with two outs a single by Carter Grote drove in a run for a 17-1 game. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the seventh and the Paladins stranded two in the top of the eighth. After scoring a run on a wild pitch, the Terriers had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth when a ground out by
McClain Bradley scored a run.
Cody Miller and
Max McDougald added RBI singles to push the lead to 21-1. Furman had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the ninth when a fielding error allowed one run to score. A pop up ended the game with a 21-2 final score.

Spencer Kulman (5-1) started for the Terriers and went seven innings with one run allowed on eight hits, along with four strikeouts.
Quintin Pile worked the eighth with one hit allowed and a strikeout.
Elliot Lance threw the ninth with one run allowed on one hit.

Furman starter Grant Schuermann (3-3) threw 1.1 innings and gave up eight runs on five hits with one strikeout. Heath Hawkins worked 1.2 innings with two runs scored on three hits and two strikeouts. Austin Wood went an inning with seven runs allowed on six hits. Will Dvorak threw two innings with one run allowed on two hits. Trent Alley worked an inning without allowing a hit. Paul Todd went two-thirds of an inning with four runs allowed on two hits. Ruddy Jones gave up one hit and had a strikeout in a third of an inning.

The second game began with the Paladins reaching on an error and a double by Landon Kay for a 1-0 lead. With one out, Kay scored from third on a wild pitch for a 2-0 advantage. A ground out added a run and the Paladins had a 3-0 lead in the middle of the first.
Brett Rodriguez singled to start the bottom of the first. Rodriguez stole second and third, while
Andrew Orzel walked and stole second. A sacrifice fly by
McClain Bradley cut the lead to 3-1

In the second inning, Furman left one runner on base and the Terriers were retired in order. Furman had the first two runners reach in the top of the third, but were unable to advance. Wofford went in order to end the third inning and the Paladins had two singles in the top of the fourth. The Terriers left one runner on base to end the fourth frame and Furman stranded one in the top of the fifth.

Wofford led off the bottom of the fifth with a single by Max MacDougald and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A double off the wall in left field by
Reed Massey scored McDougald for a 3-2 game.
Andrew Orzel picked a good spot for his first career home run, as his shot over the fence in left gave the Terriers a 4-3 lead.

Furman went down in order in the sixth inning and the Terriers stranded one. The Paladins opened the seventh with a walk and sacrifice bunt. A single by Brandon Elmy drove in a run to tie the game at four. After another single, a double off the wall by Jason Costa plated a pair of runs as Furman took a 6-4 lead. The Terriers were then retired in order to end the seventh inning.

The Paladins took advantage of a hit by pitch and error, scoring both of the runners on a two out single by Brandon Elmy for an 8-4 advantage in the middle of the eighth. Wofford went in order in the bottom of the eighth inning. Furman tacked on four more runs on four hits in the top of the ninth inning as they extended the lead to 12-4.
Carson Waln led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, but was unable to score as the game ended on a fly ball.

Austin Higginbotham (0-3) started for Wofford and went 6.1 innings with six runs allowed on nine hits, plus he struck out one batter.
Merritt Huber threw 1.1 innings with two runs allowed on two hits and two strikeouts.
Cole Bradley did not allow a hit in a third of an inning.
Grant Byers gave up three runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Rashesh Pandya allowed one run on two hits in the final third of an inning.

Matthew Quarles (3-1) was the Paladin starter and threw six innings with four runs allowed on four hits, along with eight strikeouts. Billy Greenfield earned his first save of the season by going three innings with one hit allowed and four strikeouts.

Wofford will host Presbyterian College on Wednesday night at Fluor Field in Greenville at 6:00 p.m. The Terriers will then travel north for a three-game series at Villanova and a midweek contest at Navy.
