Baseball Drops Contest At USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team made the short trip to USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon at Harley Park and were defeated 14-10. The Terriers jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, but the Spartans took the lead in the fourth. Wofford tied the game, but five runs in the sixth inning for the Spartans gave them an advantage the Terriers could not overcome.
 
Wofford is 3-8 on the season, while USC Upstate is 5-8. The teams will meet two more times this season. The Terriers were led by Cody Miller who was 4-of-5 from the plate with three RBIs. Jordan Miller led the Spartans with four hits and two RBIs.
 
Kody Ruedisili started the game with a triple and Alex Malsch followed with a double for a 1-0 lead. A single by Brett Hash drove in Malsh to make it 2-0. Max McDougald added a double and a single by Cody Miller added two more runs. The Terriers left a pair of runners on base to end the top of the first with a 4-0 lead. The Spartans were retired in order in the bottom of the first and Wofford went in order in the top of the second.
 
In the bottom of the second, the Spartans led off with a double. The runner was out at home on a fielder's choice, but then a triple made it a 4-1 game. Wofford had two runners on base in the top of the third after a walk by Max McDougald and a single by Cody Miller. A RBI single by Carson Waln pushed the score to 5-1 in the middle of the third.
 
The Spartans led off the bottom of the third with a walk. With one out, a walk and back-to-back RBI singles made it a 5-3 game. A double play ended the third inning. Wofford left one runner on base in the top of the fourth after Brett Hash singled with two outs. The Spartans had runners on the corners in the bottom of the fourth after a single and an error when a home run by Jordan Miller gave Upstate a 6-5 lead.
 
With one out in the top of the fifth, Cody Miller and Alec Cargin singled for the Terriers. It was the first career hit for Cargin. Ty Reginelli delivered a single with two out that drove in Miller to tie the game at 6. The bottom of the fifth began with a walk and hit by pitch for the Spartans. With one out, a single loaded the bases and a walk allowed the Spartans to regain the lead at 7-6.
 
Alex Malsch started the sixth inning with a single and Max McDougald walked with two outs. Cody Miller beat out the throw on an infield single and Malsch scored to tie the game at 7. The bases were loaded after Alex Cargin reached on a strikeout/wild pitch, but a strikeout ended the top half. The Spartans had a hit by pitch and walk to open the bottom of the sixth and the runners advanced on a wild pitch. A ground out plated a run for an 8-7 lead and an RBI single made it 9-7. A wild pitch scored a run and then a single by Zach Krider added two more runs for a 12-7 score.
 
Ty Reginelli led off the top of the seventh with a double and he moved to third on a fly ball. Alex Malsch was hit by a pitch and then Brett Hash reached on an error that allowed Reginelli to cross the plate. Malsch scored from third base on a wild pitch and a Mack Nathanson sacrifice fly cut the lead to 12-10 at the seventh inning stretch. The Spartans added a single with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but were able to advance the runner.
 
In the eighth, Wofford had one runner reach on a walk. The Spartans had runners in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the eighth when a single plated both runners for a 14-10 lead. Wofford left one runner on base in the top of the ninth when a strikeout ended the contest.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Austin Higginbotham allowed six runs on six hits in three innings with one strikeout. Matt Ellmyer threw an inning with one hit allowed and a strikeout. Elliot Lance gave up one run. Merritt Huber (0-1) allowed two runs in an inning with a strikeout. Reece Maniscalco worked two-thirds of an inning with three runs allowed on two hits. Jake Hershman went two innings with two runs on four hits and a strikeout. Quintin Pile made his first appearance of the season and recorded an out.
 
Sean Hupp started for the Spartans and gave up four runs in a third of an inning on five hits with one strikeout. Bryan Hathaway went 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Cory Bartholomew (1-1) went two-thirds of an inning with three runs allowed on one hit and two strikeouts. Sam Rogers added 1.2 innings without allowing a hit and a strikeout. Zach Krider went the ninth and did not allow a hit with one strikeout.
 
Wofford will be at home for the next fourteen games, beginning Tuesday afternoon against LaSalle at 5:00 p.m.
