Baseball Splits Doubleheader At WCU

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – In a Sunday doubleheader, the Wofford College baseball team split a pair of games against Western Carolina at Hennon Stadium. In the opener, the Catamounts scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning and held off a late rally by the Terriers to win 10-7. In game two, Wofford scored four runs in the first inning and added eight in the sixth inning on the way to an 18-3 win.
                    
Wofford is 25-23 on the season and 10-8 in the Southern Conference. Western Carolina is 24-22 overall and 13-8 in the league to sit in second place. The Terriers had a season-high 21 hits in the second game, as all nine batters had at least one hit and Brett Hash had four hits. In the first game, Wofford had 12 hits, with three by Cody Miller. Wofford left a season-high 15 runners on base in the first game and stranded 14 on base in the second game.  
 
In the first game, Kody Ruedisili and McClain Bradley led off with back-to-back singles. A walk to Brett Hash loaded the bases, but the Terriers were unable to plate a run. The Catamounts opened the bottom of the first with a single and sacrifice bunt, with the runner moving to third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly made it 1-0. Another single was followed by a double to give the Catamounts a 2-0 advantage.
 
Max McDougald singled to lead off the second inning and Cody Miller followed with a home run over the fence in left field to tie the game at 2-2. It was his ninth home run of the season. On the first pitch in the bottom of the second, Andrew Bullock hit a solo home run to give the Catamounts a 3-2 lead.
 
The Terriers started the third inning with back-to-back walks to Carson Waln and Mack Nathanson. The runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out by Max McDougald tied the game at 3-3. Western Carolina had a single and a double to lead off the bottom of the third. With one out, a fielding error allowed a run to score for a 4-3 lead. A single added two more runs for a 6-3 advantage. Andrew Bulloch then hit his second home run of the day and the Catamounts took an 8-3 lead.
 
A single by Andrew Orzel started the fourth inning and then Kody Ruedisili was hit by a pitch. Three straight strikeouts ended the top of the frame. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, the Catamounts had runners on the corners after an error and single. An RBI single and a wild pitch both added runs for a 10-3 lead. The Terriers had runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the fifth inning, but both runners were stranded.
 
The Catamounts led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, which was followed by a double play and strikeout to end the inning. Kody Ruedisili opened the sixth inning with a double and Brett Rodriguez singled. With one out, a single by Carson Waln drove in Ruedisili to make it a 10-4 game. The Terriers stranded two runners in the middle of the sixth inning. Western Carolina left two runners in scoring position to end the frame.
 
With one out in the top of the seventh, Cody Miller hit a solo home run and cut the lead to 10-5. It was his tenth homer of the season. In the seventh inning, both teams left one runner on base. Alec Cargin reached on an error to begin the eighth inning and with one out he scored on a double by Stone Pellegrino. A wild pitch moved Pellegrino to third and Ty Reginelli walked. A ground out by Max McDougald added a run for a 10-7 score. After a walk by Cody Miller, a fly ball ended the top half with two runners stranded.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, the Catamounts led off with a double. After a strikeout and a walk, the Terriers turned a double play to end the eighth inning. Kody Ruedisili opened the ninth with a walk. A pair of strikeouts and a fielder's choice ended the game.
 
Spencer Kulman (8-4) started for the Terriers and threw four innings with ten runs allowed on ten hits, while striking out one batter. Rasesh Pandya went a career-long three innings and did not allow a run on four hits, along with two strikeouts. David Ehmen allowed one hit and had a strikeout in a third of an inning. Merritt Huber went two-thirds of an inning without a hit allowed.
 
Western Carolina starter Brendan Nail (5-7) went five innings with three runs allowed on six hits, along with seven strikeouts. Dylan Biumi threw two innings with two runs allowed on five hits, plus three strikeouts. Jacob Brakefield went two-thirds of an inning with two runs allowed on one hit. Korey Anderson earned the save by going the final 1.1 innings without allowing a hit and striking out two batters.
 
To begin the second game, McClain Bradley walked and Brett Hash doubled with one out. A single up the middle by Carson Waln gave Wofford a 1-0 lead. Mack Nathanson reached on a fielder's choice and a triple by Reed Massey drove in two runs for a 3-0 advantage. After a walk to Max McDougald, a double by Cody Miller plated a run and Wofford had a 4-0 lead in the middle of the first. The Catamounts led off with a single, but a fielder's choice and double play ended the first frame.
 
The Terriers had two singles in the second and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, but a strikeout ended the top half. After a lead-off walk, Caleb Robinson hit a two-run homer out to left field to cut the lead to 4-2. In the top of the third with one out, Cody Miller walked and Brett Rodriguez singled. An error on a fielder's choice loaded the bases and a walk to Brett Hash added a run to make it 5-2. A fielder's choice ended the top half with three runners stranded.
 
In the bottom of the third, the Catamounts opened with a walk and a single. A fly ball and double play ended the inning. Mack Nathanson led off the fourth with a single and a hit-and-run single gave Wofford runners on the corners with one out. Cody Miller walked to load the bases and a sacrifice fly by Brett Rodriguez gave the Terriers a 6-2 lead. Western Carolina had a single in the fourth, but left the runner on base.
 
McClain Bradley doubled to lead off the fifth inning and moved to third on a passed ball. A single up the middle by Brett Hash made it a 7-2 game. After a fielder's choice by Carson Waln, Mack Nathanson hit his 11th home run of the second and the Terriers had a 9-2 lead. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, the Catamounts had a pair of hits and a stolen base cut the score to 9-3.
 
Cody Miller was hit by a pitch to begin the sixth inning and he moved to second on a wild pitch. A single by Kody Ruedisili and McClain Bradley getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases with one out. A single through the right side by Brett Hash drove in two runs for an 11-3 lead and a triple by Carson Waln drove in two more runs for a 13-3 advantage. An RBI single from Mack Nathanson scored Waln and a double by Reed Massey scored Nathanson to give Wofford a 15-3 lead. After a Max McDougald reached on an error, Massey scored with two out on a wild pitch. A single by Brett Rodriguez added a run for a 17-3 game in the middle of the sixth.
 
After the Catamounts were retired in order to end the sixth inning, McClain Bradley led off the seventh with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. A single up the middle by Brett Hash scored Bradley for an 18-3 lead. A single by Reed Massey and a walk to Max McDougald loaded the bases with two outs, but a fly ball ended the top half. In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, the Catamounts had a double. A ground out ended the game, with the run rule in effect after seven complete innings.
 
Wofford starter Austin Higginbotham (5-4) threw his third complete game of the season. In seven innings, he gave up three runs on seven hits, while striking out two and walking a pair.
 
Dillon Bray (2-4) started for the Catamounts and went 2.2 innings with five runs allowed on seven hits, along with five walks and four strikeouts. Jake Niezen threw 1.2 innings and allowed four runs on five hits with one strikeout. B.J. Nobles went 1.1 innings and allowed eight runs on six hits, while striking out three. Jake Moebius threw the final 1.1 innings with one run allowed on three hits, along with two strikeouts.
 
Wofford will travel to Winthrop on Tuesday and USC Upstate on Wednesday to complete the non-conference schedule for the season. The Terriers only have two home dates remaining, a single game on May 12 and a doubleheader on May 14, against Mercer.
