Women's Basketball Rolls Past Cougars in Home-Opener, 78-58

Wanink led the Terriers with a game-high 20 points and five rebounds

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Four different Terriers scored in double-figures on Sunday afternoon, as the Wofford women's basketball team earned a 78-58 victory in their home-opener at Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Terriers capitalized on the Cougars' 25 turnovers in the contest to move their overall record to 2-3 while College of Charleston drops their record to an even 2-2.

The Cougars jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the first quarter before consecutive jumpers from Chloe Wanink and a Marissa Bayer layup would knot the score at 15-15 at the 4:09 mark. College of Charleston's Deja Ford responded knocking down a 3-pointer, followed by a Baileigh Larson layup, though, the Terriers fought back on a pair of free throws from Bayer and a Jamari McDavid layup to end the quarter trailing 20-19.

The Terriers began to find their groove in the second quarter, taking their first lead of the day on back-to-back layups from McDavid and MaryMartha Turner to give Wofford a 23-21 lead. Chloe Wanink would then go on to connect on a 3-pointer and jumper in the paint to extend the Terriers' lead to 28-21 with 5:11 left in the half. The Cougars hung around, trading baskets with Wofford, before a Cairo Booker steal and layup produced the Terriers largest lead of the half at eight points, 33-25. A free throw by Turner would send the score at 34-27 going into halftime.

The second half proved to be all Wofford, as the Terriers never looked back coming out the intermission. Wofford shot 58 percent in the third quarter, jumping out to a 19-point lead by the 4:41 mark, which featured a series of jumpers and layups from Wanink, McDavid, and Jackie Carman. The Terriers kept an at least 10-point favor throughout the frame, ending on a Carman 3-pointer to send Wofford up 60-43 into the fourth quarter.

The Terriers continued to pour in baskets, exceeding a 20-point lead throughout the remainder of the contest, as a pair of free throws from MaryMartha Turner followed by a Booker layup would give Wofford its largest lead of the day, 75-52, with 3:36 left to play. Going forward, College of Charleston would convert a couple of baskets before an Alea Harris layup would end the Terriers scoring on day, ultimately earning the 78-58 win at the end of regulation.

Wofford's defense in the second half made all the difference, as they held College of Charleston to 32 percent shooting (8-25 FG) from the field and 13 percent (1-8 3FG) from beyond the arc. Additionally, the Terriers won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Cougars 42-37.

Chloe Wanink led all scorers with a game-high 20 points on 8-of-23 shooting (35 percent) and five rebounds, while Jamari McDavid totaled 14 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Marissa Bayer (11 points, six rebounds) and Jackie Carman (10 points) rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Terriers on the day. Cairo Booker finished with nine points and six rebounds while freshman forward MaryMartha Turner provided a spark off the bench, notching a season-high seven points and six rebounds.
