STATESBORO, Ga. - The Wofford women's basketball team opened the 2018 season victorious, beating Georgia Southern 81-65 on Tuesday night. Wofford never trailed in the game, dominating on both the offensive and defensive ends, as the Terriers shot 53 percent from the field, and beyond the arc, on 33-of-62 shooting while holding Georgia Southern to 39 percent from the field on 24-of-62 shooting.Â
The Terriers showcased their hot-shooting early on, starting the game on a 12-0 run sparked by a Jackie Carman three-pointer. Chloe Wanink would go on to hit three more consecutive threes before Georgia Southern would eventually get on the scoreboard with 6:50 left in the first. Wofford jumped out to a 22-10 lead by the end of the first quarter, capping the period with a 6-0 run that saw jumpers from Jamari McDavid, Alea Harris, and Chloe Wanink.Â
The Eagles cut into the Wofford lead to start the second quarter, bringing the score within two points at 22-20 leading into a media timeout at the 6:50 mark. Both teams went back and forth over the next four minutes, with Wofford seeing a pair of jumpers from Wanink and Da'Ja Green in addition to a pair of layups from Jamari McDavid. Chloe Wanink would go on to score the Terriers last seven points of the half, on a three and two jumpers, to give the Terriers a 41-33 cushion heading into the intermission.Â
The Terriers never looked back coming out the break, as they were able to turn defense into offense forcing seven Georgia Southern turnovers throughout the third quarter. Jackie Carman came alive, scoring 10 of her 17 points in the period to give Wofford a 17-point lead at the 2:38 mark. A pair of free throws and three-pointer, from McDavid and Anna Claire Atha respectively, pushed the score to 66-49 at the end of the frame.Â
The fourth quarter saw balanced scoring from Marissa Bayer, Chloe Wanink, and Da'Ja Green, reaching leads up to 25 points throughout the half. The Terriers would go on to control the duration of play to earn the 81-65 win at the end of regulation.Â
The Terriers out rebounded Georgia Southern, 39-32, while dishing 17 assists as a team.Â
Wofford was led by Chloe Wanink (30 points, eight rebounds, two steals) on the night, as she went 5-7 from beyond the arc. Jamari McDavid (17 points, 12 rebounds, three steals) notched her first double-double of the 2018 season while freshman Jackie Carman added 19 points (7-16) and three assists in her Wofford debut. The Terriers also saw efforts from Da'Ja Green with six points, nine assists, and two rebounds.Â
Next, the Terriers will travel to take on Clemson on Thursday, November 8 for a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup.
