Women's Basketball Falls 85-77 at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Wofford women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought matchup Thursday night, falling to Clemson 85-77 at Littlejohn Coliseum. The Terriers played solid defensively, holding Clemson to 42 percent (33-78 FG) from the field and 15 percent (2-13 3FG) from beyond the arc, though, late second half turnovers would give Clemson the edge to pull away in the fourth quarter. The loss drops Wofford to 1-1 while Clemson starts the season off 1-0.

The Terriers came out connecting on their first three shots from the field, with two jumpers from Chloe Wanink and a 3-pointer by Jackie Carman, to take an early 7-4 lead. The Tigers would respond with a pair of Kobi Thornton layups before both teams went on to trade baskets over a three-minute stretch. Two 3-pointers by Wanink and Da'Ja Green, in addition to two Wanink jumpers, would push the Terriers largest lead of the night to seven at 25-18 with 1:45 left. The Tigers cut the deficit to one before a pair of Wanink and Anna Claire Atha free throws would send the Terriers up 29-26 heading into the second quarter.

Wofford continued to trade baskets with the Tigers, seeing scores from Wanink, Jamari McDavid, and Jackie Carman to eventually jump out to a 43-37 lead around the five minute mark. A jumper from Da'Ja Green and layup by Niyah Lutz would make the score 47-41 before layups from Clemson's Chyna Cotton, Simone Westbrook, and a jumper by Tylar Bennett would tie the score at 47-47 heading into halftime.

The Tigers took their first lead since the opening basket in the third quarter, jumping out to a quick 52-47 lead, though, Wofford would regain its lead 58-55 around the 6:37 mark, courtesy of an Alea Harris 3-pointer and Marissa Bayer jumper. Four lead changes would ensue over the following six minutes, before Clemson would hold on to a 67-66 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Three Wofford turnovers to start the fourth quarter would allow Clemson layups for Kobi Thornton, Danielle Edwards, and Taylor Hosendove to push a 76-68 lead. Clemson would go on to push an 11-point lead 82-71, its largest lead of the night, with a minute left before Chloe Wanink would rally two late threes to bring it within five. However, Clemson would hold on with two late free throws to earn the 85-77 win at the end of regulation.

Wofford shot 43.1 percent from the field (31-72 FG) and 36.8 percent (7-19 3FG) from beyond the arc. The Tigers won the rebound battle over Wofford, 48-42, while also forcing 22 turnovers to their 16.

Chloe Wanink paced the Terriers for her second consecutive 30-point performance with 35 points (15-23 FG, 3-4 3FG), seven rebounds, and three assists. Jackie Carman followed behind with 12 points and six rebounds while Da'Ja Green rounded out all scorers in double-figures (11 points, seven rebounds, six assists). The Terriers also received efforts from Jamari McDavid, who fouled out with eight points and six rebounds.
